He’s not wrong that he’s underpaid for a mathematics professor (associate, NOT adjunct). Doubt he has a Union. My wife has the same classification and her pay is MUCH higher, but she’s unionized.

They do research in addition to some teaching, he just teaches.

Teaching jobs in academia pay very little, you need to do research and bring in overhead $$$ to get substantial raises and good salaries. If he does not like his pay, he should start writing grants. Reality of life is that there are hordes of people who can TEACH at university level, so their salaries are depressed to the point of being very low. There are many fewer people who can navigate the Byzantine labyrinths of getting grant money and who can lead and manage a research group, thus their pay is much better. Additionally, faculty pay in engineering will be much better than faculty pay in math which will still be better than faculty pay in English literature or transgendered Eskimo studies, because of availability of well-paid jobs outside of teaching.
