Between 1991 and 2004, demonstrations in Russia were regulated by a decree first issued by the Supreme Soviet in 1988 and reaffirmed, with minor modifications, by presidential decrees in 1992 and 1993. In 2004 these were replaced by the Federal Law of the Russian Federation No.54-FZ "On Meetings, Rallies, Demonstrations, Marches and Pickets" (current version signed into law by the President of Russia on 19 June 2004, and came into force on 4 July 2004). If the assembly in public is expected to involve more than one participant, its organisers are obliged to notify executive or local self-government authorities of the upcoming event few days in advance in writing. However, legislation does not foresee an authorisation procedure, hence the authorities have no right to prohibit an assembly or change its place unless it threatens the security of participants or is planned to take place near hazardous facilities, important railways, viaducts, pipelines, high voltage electric power lines, prisons, courts, presidential residences or in the border control zone. The right to gather can also be restricted in close proximity of cultural and historical monuments.

The regional and local authorities can issue secondary regulations, but limitations and prohibitions on public events can only be introduced by Federal Laws. In June 2012, the Russian parliament voted on legislation that sought to raise the fixed fines for holding unsanctioned demonstrations from 5,000 rubles (around $150) to 300,000 rubles (around $10,000) for individual participants and increase to 600,000 rubles for rally organizers. The fine for the demonstration organizers that fail to comply with federal regulations on demonstrations were to increase from 50,000 rubles ($1,160) to 1.5 million rubles ($48,000). Since 2014, holding a demonstration without the permission of authorities, even a peaceful single-person picket, is punishable by a fine or detention of up to 15 days, or up to five years in prison if it is the third breach.

Ukrainians sink Russian warship that attacked Snake Island – report

The Russian warship that bombed Snake Island in the Black Sea on the first day of the invasion of Ukraine has been destroyed, The Times of London reported on Tuesday.

The report, quoting Ukrainian military sources, said that the large patrol corvette Vasily Bykov was destroyed in a missile attack near the port city of Odesa early Monday.

On February 24, the Russian naval vessel had asked Ukrainian border guards on Snake Island — some 40 kilometers (25 miles) from the border with Romania — to surrender or “be hit with a bomb strike.”

“Russian warship, go fuck yourself,” a Ukrainian border guard replied.

Videos shared on social media showed the rocket exchange when the Russian ship was targeted. The video is believed to have been released by the Ukrainian Navy.

PS. If I understand it correctly they hit it with a land-based MLRS.

The video showed a conversation taking place between two men targeting the ship.

“We fucking hit them,” one of the men is heard saying. The second man invokes the Ukrainian soldier’s words from when the island was attacked, saying: “Russian warship, go fuck yourself.”

Who cares if they ultimately died or not? After Leonidas replied "molon labe" to Xerxes' offer to surrender - they didn't die to the last fighter either. It takes balls to do what Leonidas or these Border Guards did.

I'll give you anothet example of bravery in the face of overwhelming force which didn't end in a single death of the defenders: when Serbs advanced on Srebrenitsa they first tried to go through a checkpoint manned by Brits and basically told them to lay doen their arms and fuck off. The commander of British outfit literally answered "molon labe".The Serbs turned around and went through a different route guarded by Dutch soldiers who did lay down their arms and let them through (and we know how it ended).

So some of the Ukie guards were taken prisoner after they ran out of ammo. It's not about dying or not dying, it's
about balls vs no balls in the moment when you know you can't win but you still choose to fight and risk almost certain death.

Americans used to understand these things. Sadly, it looks like they don't anymore. And judging by bizzare questions like "why would somebody fight for a country with such a low GDP per capita" on this board they don't understand other things they used to understand. Makes me really worried for my country.

Sure, IF they did it.

It's a pretty simple rule - once a media outlet starts to lie to you, unless they apologize profusely, explain how they produced the "error", and loudly retract it - you're reading propaganda, and you should just completely ignore it.

But people don't. They keep going back to these liars and keep quoting them over and over again. A propagandist will ONLY be honest with you when it's convenient to be honest. They have ZERO credibility.

Now, 20 years ago, it was aggravating as hell to see people repeating propaganda from Fox news or the NY Times or CNN but in time, people realized these "information sources" were actively deceptive and dishonest and in the last 5 years this has been doubly underscored. 20 years ago, I could forgive people for being so innocent and naive. You don't seem to be able to distinguish between country and government of a country.

In my country, the United States, we have a puppet regime installed by the CIA who has been trying to restart the Cold War and has kept this nation in war (to our great detriment) for 2 solid decades. If Russia came in to Washington DC and just said "we're here to kill every one of these fucking bastards) 1/2 the country would just celebrate at this point.

Why Ukrainians fight for their PUPPET regime, I have no idea. But it's their country. I think they are foolish to do it, but it's their lives and their deaths. Ultimately, I don't care what they do. I only care when my country is involved with it, and it is. The US overthrew Ukraine in 2014, and if that wasn't done, NONE of this bullshit would be happening.

The only thing which happened in 2014 is some guy who was their President has left in a haste after overreacting to protests and fearing he'd be held responsible for the overly harsh attempts to put them dow, resulting in 100+ deaths. The Parliament remained. Which is, incidentally, the main source of the legitimacy in that country. (Just like in the US, btw). Then they held a presidential election. And then they held parliamental elections. And then they held another presidential election. And a parliamental election after that again. All of which were monitored by various international organizations and accepted as free and fair. Even fucking Russia accepted these elections and their results EVERY FUCKING TIME. And at every election the mix of political parties in power changed, so the guy who became the President after the first election is not the guy in power now and the party which held the power then is not the party in power now.
