Could A Russian Cyberattack Take Down The U.S. Airtaffic Control System?

#russiancyberattackairtrafficcontrolsystem Elena flies to Hawaii in 6 days. She is concerned about one possible problem. While she is in the air over the Pacific Ocean, Russian hackers stage a cyberattack and take down the US air traffic control system. Her tough question to me is:
"How do they land the plane without air traffic control?"
Some eight years ago, I was at Aeroparque Airport in Buenos Aires on a cold winter afternoon. After a long business trip in Argentina, I was getting ready to return to Sao Paulo, spend time with you Anna, and fly back to San Francisco.
As I waited at my gate to board my flight, I heard a loud and explosive "pop!" It seemed as if a giant lightning strike had hit the airport. All monitors went dead. The electricity went off. There was a deathly silence everywhere. People then got angry. Finally, an announcement was made that all flights were canceled, and we all needed to leave the airport.
Hundreds of people were in the airport. All of them had checked out of their hotels. Now they were going to have to find a hotel room to stay in for who knows how many days? In my case, I had a wonderful relationship with the staff of a boutique hotel where I stayed. I was able to get my room back. I had no idea of how long I would be stuck in Buenos Aires.
The truth soon came out. Air traffic controllers in Argentina were in a labor dispute with management. They had staged a shutdown of the air traffic control system as a protest. When they "pulled the plug" on the air traffic control system, several planes were still in the air. These controllers took great care to make sure that each plane was guided in and landed safely. No aircraft crashed. No passengers were injured.
On the following morning, I went to the Lan Chile office. I got the guarded good news that I would be able to fly out in two days to Sao Paulo. I was given a new air ticket at no cost to me. My ongoing flights back to the US were changed at no charge to me.
It was a cold and stormy Wednesday when I boarded the flight to Sao Paulo. We lifted off during a violent rainstorm. The five-hour flight was full of turbulence and zero visibility. I prayed that the air traffic controllers were back at work and doing their job. I was so relieved when I landed at the main Sao Paulo airport.
I did some research. At any given moment, some 5,000 airliners are in the air over the US. The Federal Aviation Administration air traffic controllers do a superb job of managing this large number of large and complex aircraft. If they were taken out of the picture, pandemonium would follow. I am sure that most pilots have trained for a contingency like this. They would have to navigate to their destination airports. Perhaps local airport personnel could "talk them down." I'm sure that midair collisions and crashes would happen. Those lucky enough to land would be stranded until the air traffic control system could be brought back online. If the average airliner has 250 passengers, we can multiply this by 5,000 to get an estimate of 1,250,000 passengers. Imagine the huge job of changing travel plans for a large part of these passengers. Many would have to be housed in hotels for an indefinite period. the costs would be staggering.
Please do not lose sleep over this possibility. It is a low-probability event. On the other hand, Vladimir Putin is a vicious and vindictive man who cannot stand to lose. He has absolutely no regard for human life He is capable of ordering such a cyberattack.

You jumped the shark on this one dude. You do know pilots know what to do if ATC goes dark, right? They train for it. Hell most general aviation pilots only communicate with the tower at their airport if their even is one. Midair collisions are also near impossible even if ATC goes dark as planes have power and required location equipment now. Also, as long as the plane is flying you can give your location direct to others in the air.

Sure an ATC take down would shut down commercial airlines before departure. But every plane in the air would get to a safe airport with no issue. Plus, those systems are likely on a natural gas back up generator so if the grid was damaged/hacked, they could still be operational on the ground.

I don't care for Putin or much of that part of the globe. But this is crazy talk man.

Russian cyberwar capabilities seems as overhyped as the rest of their war capabilities: land war, air war, naval war...

Yeah, not going so well for them.

ATC would be fine. Hacking isn't the concern, it's physical damage. We've had it near me actually in the last decade. Employee started a fire at the Aurora ATC center. The Elgin, IL center just picked up the traffic, delays for commercial flights ensued for sure. It caused issues, but planes won't run into each other. This is a totally retarded view and understanding of how air traffic works by ohomen. Not meant to be personal, but is fact.

Most general aviation doesn't even use the radio unless going into a busy class airspace or regional airport. You just make a call out on the airport frequency. Just did this a month ago with a friend who flew us to southern IL and I'm an aviation junkie as well.

Elena should know if she watched Airplane, that the auto pilot can be activated by inflating it via the urethral air inlet located in the crotch area.

Meh I don’t care.
If air travelers become stranded, they’re still better off than Russian vacationers who suddenly had their credit cards revoked and their plane tickets home cancelled. These people have become penniless vagrants and usually criminalized for non-payment of hotel bills (because their cards are dead). What would you do if you were on vacation in, say, Fiji, when suddenly the world banking system decided that the USA was run by criminals and cancelled all American access to credit cards and banking? Oh and your ticket home is also gone because your airline is no longer flying abroad. To make matters worse, you’ve been in Fiji for a week and the concierge is asking if you have another card to run because the one you gave him won’t work. You give him your other cards and they also don’t work. You go to an ATM but can’t get cash. The hotel bill is $3500 and it’s due right away or the police will be called.
What do you do?

I used to work on the air traffic control system. I'm totally not worried about it.

Russian Cyber Attack! Russian Chemical Weapon Attack!
I think they are trying to revive flagging interest in their 'nukes are not a big deal, don't be a sissy about WW3' programing.

Come back home and overthrow Putin, duh.

Now Elena is going to cover herself in aluminum foil and start hanging around airports.

I don’t think Russian hacking is a big risk for the air traffic control system but I can be wrong.

My understanding of the system is they use radar and other things to locate the airplanes and talk to the pilots over radio.

I don’t know what the internet has to do with the system.

On YouTube there are some things where you hear the talking to controllers and see a map with the plane moving around, pretty cool.

I watched one of the guy who recently landed a plane from the Bahamas in Palm Beach airport, he had never flown or taken a class before.

Pure hyperbole!

There isn't one single example of Putin's disregard for human life, but idiots toss it around like they are saying "The Sky is Blue!".
Where as Xi has many examples of no regard for human life. He kills Uyrgers by the trainload, and unleashed the Covid Virus on the world because he like the Obiden cabal, can't stand to lose. Just as you describe Putin.

Didn't we kill a whole charcuterie board of Iranian Generals named Salami?

A false flag by Mi6.

Guess who died when the Skripal's were "poisoned"?

Their 3 pets. Two gerbils and a cat were left locked in the house to slowly starve to death. The cat survived, but the authorities euthanized it anyhow.

If Putin wanted them dead, he'd just get a thug to kill him randomly on the street - you know, like our government did to Seth Rich.

which would be worse? A russian cyber attack, a chinese cyber attack, a north korean cyber attack, or a cia sponsored cyber attack blamed on 1 of the previous 3? And which one is more likely?

After adding aliens and Bohemian Grove sacrifice to the choices, we need to ask former Patnetter Gary about his opinion.

Don't worry about Russia. The vaccines already wiped out air travel with thousands of flights cancelled every week. And then we have Boeing planes that fall apart in mid air for no apparent reason.

You're not wrong. They'd have to shut down the electric grid and nat. gas network. Radios are radios if that makes sense. If you have the power, which most systems have a nat gas backup, ATC would operate just fine and the plane has its own power. Even then pilots could theoretically create their own ATC in the air and communicate with each other. Plenty of non-towered airports in the country already.

Would it be hectic, yes. But in a 3D space it's not that difficult to keep things from colliding with each other via ATC or plane to plane communication. Biggest concern would be lining everyone up at a busy major airport with spacing for landing and take off. Only issue could be general aviation flights at higher altitudes flying VFR and not using radio.

We just flew in a Cessna 172 and we all kept our eyes looking for traffic regardless of anything on the radio. Pilot and passengers.
