I like that rule. Heard it before, but never saw it explained clearly:

Declaring yourself to be operating by "Crocker's Rules" means that other people are allowed to optimize their messages for information, not for being nice to you. I think we all end up adopting the rule anyhow once you get old enough and you're talking to somebody anonymous. It's a good rule in discussion. The only person that really can insult you is you. You have to believe that what is said may possibly be true.
