I don’t know the answer. I do know that this gun was sold to civilians after ww2(and actually taken home by many soilders). It has clips up to 25 or 30 rounds and can fuck up unarmed people as good as any modern gun.

I'd agree with this. Also a lot of people have family heirloom weapons from long deceased family members that they keep for future value or to remember a grandparent or something. Yet they'd never use it and just keep it in the basement. My mom currently has a shotgun (which I need to get from her) and she would never use it, but she'd count as a gun owner.

Best metric would probably be FOID card holders if the state requires it. I think most do. Take the bluest state and the most red state and meet in the middle is probably a pretty good guess of gun ownership. No point in getting a FOID card without intending to buy a gun. I'm not going to look this up, but I think that would get you a better idea of how many actual Americans own guns.

Doesn't mean much though when you figure many of the guns are in inner city ghettos and nothing is registered and no FOID card. Just the major cities there's probably 2-3M people nationwide with guns illegally I'd guess. Anecdotal, but I'd say about 60-70% of the people I know own a gun of some sort. I live in an area though where gun raffles are a multiple yearly event for the Lions club and other organizations. Also a lot of fellow Illinoian's outside of Chicago hunt here in IL and up in Wisconsin and Minnesota.

TL:DR - If you have one gun or 10 guns it doesn't much matter as you can only fire one, maybe two at a time. FOID card is best metric. There are for sure more guns than the population of the country.

A normal gun owner never owns just a single gun. Most own several, and almost all have never, ever used them to kill anyone. It's an inhuman act that goes against our very nature.
