Hi guys,

There is a thread on here somewhere that was created a couple years ago or so. It was a reading list of books for kids. Everyone contributed a few of their favorites. I believe one of them was "Tunnel in the Sky", for instance. I'd like to have my mids read some of these. A few of them had a libertarian theme to them IIRC.

I have searched my old bookmarks with no luck. I've used Patrick's search function with no luck.

Does anybody remember the thread?

@patrick is there an "and" function when searching to narrow down the results? I've tried + and & and quotes "", but it seems the returned results are an "OR" function of all the words searched.

Thanks, All

@noobster

I just use the built-in search function that comes with mysql:

https://dev.mysql.com/doc/refman/8.0/en/fulltext-search.html

I don't think it takes anything other than a list of words.

The main search box at the top searches posts (threads). To search comments, you have to know the author of the comment and go to that author's page, like:

https://patrick.net/comments?a=Patrick

You can't search all the comments at once because there are too many comments to it takes like 10 seconds and slows everything down. Ultimately I should set up a separate search server.

If you can think of any unique or rare words in the original post, that would help. I tried some searches myself and couldn't find it.

@Patrick - can you access the data files directly and just use grep? If you can, using perl to find a set of keywords is pretty trivial. From that match you can move back to a link.

Yes, since I have direct db access, I did some sql queries for some common kids' books titles across all comments, but didn't find anything relevant.

I could also use grep on a database dump as text, but that would be about the same thing.

According your sql link, it seems boolean functions should work, yet they do not seem to for me.

It could have been a post about another topic that mutated into a list of kids books, and that's why I can't find it in my many bookmarks. Tunnel in the sky is the the book that most comes to mind. Ehhh... perhaps it was from a different chat dorum, but I don't think so.

No big deal. I'll make my own list.

Thanks for all the work you put into your website. It really is unique.

Hey thanks @noobster

It seems that I just have to add "in boolean mode" to the search and then you can use + to require a word and - to exclude it:

https://dev.mysql.com/doc/refman/8.0/en/fulltext-boolean.html

So I did that.

Hey, pretty cool, you can now search for phrases by putting them in quotes: "Tunnel in the Sky"

You can also look for the beginning of a word by appending the star character: Tunne*

Yeah, that's a powerful feature for sure. Glad it was easy.
