Apparently he got in an argument with a young female and threatened to shoot her. He was thrown out of the pizza joint. Then went down the street to a parking garage, and just randomly started shooting. at cars. The rest isn't clear, but the CNN report, made it out to seem, he was Drunk and it was careless manslaughter, rather than cold blooded murder. Which other's did not elaborate as much as CNN,

It was 30 years ago. He was absolutely enraged and threw her out of his office. He was a serious and smart professor. You can't sleep your way to the top in electrical engineering. It's pointless to do, you're just fucked the next semester.
