Historically the prices of gasoline and diesel fuel were not much different. Now I see that diesel is $1 more expensive than gasoline. Why is that? Are there gas-only subsidies?

Diesel has more taxes, especially in CA.

Also, gas prices lower as the summer driving season dies down. But the trucking industry never stops so the demand is always there, keeping prices up.

This. It's also dirty as fuck, but your engine will last substantially longer. But that's why they tax it higher in most states. I'm no where near an environmentalist, but diesel really is dirty. Sucks in cold weather as well.

Think about a semi, train, construction equipment, etc. Now think about that Ford Focus. Which one do you smell? It's the most efficient way to move heavy loads with an engine running 8-16 hours a day though. Also, at least in IL, diesel isn't taxed for off road (construction) purposes. So what you see at gas stations is for the truckers or the hill billies with their diesel dually.

Intentional Supply pressure, no other reason. Manipulated Diesel prices is the quickest way to artificially inflate food to the point, that 80% of Americans will be dependent on Food Stamps. The world is trying to do the same, the end game perhaps will be The One World Government will decide who gets to eat from Bill Gates Gardens.

Us common folk shouldn't burn our 2 gals of diesel per day. Only people like dicaprio should be able to burn 300+ gallons of diesel per day on his yacht. People just don't seem to understand that our "BETTERS" deserve more rights and privileges than us commoners.

You meant, "... decides who gets to eat the BUGS from Bill's gardens."

The superyacht’s seven mile sailing is a source of as much carbon as an average car’s in a year. It also demands fuel worth $339,712 to fill its tank.

$50,000,000 per year to operate.

That's pretty sad when you need one of those just to get laid.

I remember Diesel being a dollar a gallon cheaper than gas in the early 2000's, so the situation now is actually reversed. For a reason see TPB's explanation.

Yes, diesel engines are dirty, but they're more efficient, and not any more polluting.

Sulphur standards and taxes have rasied on-road diesel prices to about that of gasoline. Particulate emissions and other requirement for diesel cars and light trucks increased costs and complexity of engines and decreased efficiency and power of engines. Notice how when the Germans got caught cheating the emissions requirements, they subsequently withdrew all diesel light vehicles from the US.

No, diesel has something like 3-4 cents less taxes on it. So it's purely demand inelasticity.

The spread on gas prices is pretty wild too:

The US has refineries capable of producing diesel. The Europeans were getting about 1 million barrels per day from Russia (that amount sorta declined even with the shenanigans being pulled with Russian exports). Latin AMerica also doesn't have the refinery capabilities to fully supply their needs.

The US upped the exports to these 2 areas because the foreigners were willing to pay a higher price, thus, the US has less supply. Therefore, our price goes up.

Western democracies are still using market based economies. That may end coming up later this year. Then who gets what and why will be determined by government decree.
15   tomtomtom   @   2022 Aug 12, 9:02pm

I should clarify that the prices of gasoline and diesel started to diverge just a couple of weeks ago. Gasoline became cheaper and diesel price has not declined as much.
Perhaps this is because of supply and demand.

I am not sure if gasoline or diesel are taxed heavily in Illinois to explain the price difference.

My evidence is anecdotal since I looked only at the local gas stations. Perhaps the price difference is lower at the other gas stations.

My dad worked in the emissions testing part of Chrysler for a while, and told me that diesel particles are just the right size to get stuck in human alveoli at the bottom of the lungs and cause cancer. He was no environmentalist, so I'm pretty sure it's true.
