Not a fan. Never have been of that style. Throw a background sample on and just ramble on. Any rap I like it has to have good backing music and original beats that aren't basic. Eminem is about the only one I'm okay with and that was Dre making up the beats.

I'm also not a guy that cares for lyrics anyway. I like hearing good musicians play. Songs should be a good 8-15 minutes. And if you're into lyrics they should tell a story intertwined with the music.

Opeth comes to mind in that realm. If I pegged them to a writer it would be JRR Tolkien.

Even way back when I was a young teen, I had sense enough to dismiss any music critic that said, people like Madonna and Michael Jackson were talented.
Then when rap came along, and people started saying people that were putting that shit out, were talented. I gave up on music critics.

He seems to be able to plan his words at least a second or two in advance, and I imagine he must search through some word choices to assemble rhyming phrases, all while rapping and keeping beat saying a different line of words vs what hes planning for a second or two in the future.

Also when it comes to Rap Music, I think this little tidbit applies more than to MJ.

Rap Music is degenerate music, that grooms kids for a lawless violent future. I know Rock and Roll and kids have always been rebellious. But Rap more so, seeks to harden kids, to be productive members of a Prison system, and street level thugs, hood and Convicts. They are idolized, the more prison culture the song elicits the more popular it is. This goes way beyond rebellion, as even plenty of Gen-X idiots are into it as well. That's my generation repulsed me with "free style" and "break dancing". So it was a short leap for them to like the Thug Music when it appeared in the late 80's early 90's.
Then they try to dress it up nice and put PSA lyrics to it, like "Be Cool, Stay in School! uh, uh uh uh wiggie wiggie scrachie scratchie scratch!" Uggg!
Which even sounds more crass and forced than the shitty thug music it so desperately tries to emulate.

If Marijuana is a Gateway drug, Rap Music is a gateway to Prison. Or even death, not to mention all of the senseless stupid drive by shootings, and the expected elevated "Respected" status from a a bunch of snot faced shits, that needs nothing more than to be taken outback to the woodshed and have the full course of shit beaten out of them.

I appreciate all other genres, even every ethnic world music I've ever encountered. I can dance an all night hoe down in Lima Peru to Whino and Chicha music and never tire of it.
Even if I wont be inspired to run out and buy an album. But the first hip hop beat sends me reeling from what ever function, business or dwelling I'm at. I'm not subjecting myself to it for a minute. I'm not getting shot up because some 18 year old got his feeling hurt over the words of a shitty song, they didn't even bother to sing.

I always giggle a bit over Rap music especially the thugish songs.

Rap used to be HIGHLY political and even positive, when it first showed up. It talked about social issues and not just "duh government is at fault" - it criticized current black culture.

Jazz pianist here. Also have worked with improvisational comedy groups doing improvised musical comedies, where the songs are made up on the spot.

I agree, not everyone can do this. It’s easy to “not like” rap but not easy to string together several minutes worth of coherent rhythm and rhyme on words just given to you, as done here. I, too, am impressed.

For “freestyle” rap, it surely takes talent but there are probably tricks (stock phrases and rhymes) to smooth things out that we would not be familiar with so it all sounds fresh. Like with improvisational comedy, where you have to be generally intelligent and knowledgable, be able to draw insightful, humorous, and relevant connections, to be actually entertaining.

Even if some of it turns out to be well-rehearsed phrases, the freestyle rapper has to think of and prepare for his new material while he is rapping the filler material. Public speakers and MCs of all types have to have this talent (ad lib with relevant material that was not necessarily known beforehand) but without the rhythm and rhyme. Jazz improvisors do it with the rhythm and with melody but without the semantics.

First of all, aint no rapper just stringing together minutes of coherent rhymes. It's all they think about, they are constantly making stuff up in their heads.
Most of it is cliché and inspiration from their surroundings. Fusing it into stuff they have been mulling over for hours, days or weeks. Just like any other songwriter.

Take Led Zeppelin for example. I always thought "Wow, that Robert Plant is a Literary genius!" I would have thought he would have been writing poignant mystic romance ditties for years to come. But he didn't his inspiration was limited to Gaelic, Keltic and English folklore and songs, like many British acts of the day. Fused in with characters from the Hobbit books, and bridged together with lifted hooks from Delta Blues masters, 20 to 40 years before their time. After he got those ideas out, he was done for, as a song writer.
Bob Dylan started inspired by Classic authors as well, but he got past his initial musings, and is still writing lyrics. For a guy that a lot of people thought was just muttering nonsense, he's probably the best lyricist of all time.

The Rock and Metal of my impressionable teens was very positive can do attitude lyrics.
My Dad couldn't stand the music, he was a Big Band guy, but he appreciated the messaging in most of the Early Metal.
The only time he ever said anything. He asked me about the Mr. Crowley song I was listening to on the Blizard of Ozz album.
I just told him it was an Ozzy Song, and tried to explain Ozz's lyrics. As I didn't know who Alister Crowley was then.
He was just checking to see if I was listening to the song for the Occult messaging, or because I thought it was a rocking kick ass song. Which was the later of course.

Richard Wright and Nick Mason was Pink Floyd in my opinion, without those two Roger and David would have never made past their garage.
Just like John Paul Jones was Led Zeppelin, without him, they would have been a blues cover band.
