Mark Zuckerberg’s insistence on pivoting Facebook (now known as Meta) to focus on a digital metaverse appears to be costing him dearly, with his fortune dropping by $71 billion, or about half his overall wealth, this year alone.

Bloomberg reports that Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg may be regretting his pivot towards the metaverse as his fortune diminishes hugely. While every U.S. tech mogul has seen some of their wealth erased, Zuckerberg has been affected more than most with his fortune being cut in half dropping by $71 billion, the biggest loss among the world’s richest people according to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index.

Zuckerberg’s net worth of $55.9 billion now ranks him at the 20th spot among global billionaires, his lowest placement since 2014 behind three Waltons and two members of the Koch family.

Less than two years ago, Zuckerberg was worth $106 billion and ranked among an elite group of billionaires with only Jeff Bezos and Bill Gates placing above him in terms of personal wealth. In September 2021, Zuckerberg’s own worth reached $142 billion when Facebook shares reached as high as $382.

A month later, Zuckerberg rebranded Facebook as Meta and announced that the company would be focusing on building a digital metaverse. It has been largely downhill for Zuckerberg and the company since then as he fails to convince many that working, socializing, and living in a digital world via VR headsets is the future of the internet.

Time marches on... tick... tock...
Honestly, the best use of their cash horde may be to lobby Congress to ban their (CCP controlled?) competitor that is eating their lunch.

Meta is reportedly putting some workers onto a '30-day list' that gives them a month to find a new role at the company — or leave

Nobody wants this Meta crap.

When I was a kid, there's always this thing for "3D". 3D films never did well, they were just badly made horror films, and the technology didn't work very well with first red/green glasses then LCD shutters. There was the Virtual Boy which almost ruined Nintendo. There was MUCH later the 3DS, then 3D film made a (short) comeback with Dr. Strange and Avatar. 3D televisions were a thing, for a very short period of time. There was Oculus that was purchased by Facebook, a few other companies produced the same thing (notice you haven't heard of them).

Nobody wants it.

It's a novelty, but it's nauseating, it's not a comfortable, it's nothing like real life, Facebook has a SHIT reputation now especially among the young. It's just never going to take hold. There's already VR Chat - who has used it? It's been around forever. Ever even heard of it? It's been around since 2014. Where are the 3D video games? The only place I know where 3D does (reasonably) well is pornography.

VRChat looks pretty awful by the way, but it already looks better than the junk that Facebook is advertising.

Oculus is pretty popular with kids. I can't stand anything besides a desktop and sometimes a phone. No tablet/ipad. Never been a gamer. Don't watch TV besides an occasional show with the wife. I like being out with people even as an introvert. Trivia nights at the local bar. Volleyball. Ping Pong with my high school buddies. Golf. I'm an under 40 geezer that has no real interest in electronics anymore. Just have to deal with it with the kids. Xbox and Microsoft can lick my balls as well. Fuck that system.

It's "new". It's the novelty, it will wear off fast.

Games don't translate well to 3d. The 3d glasses fuck with your depth perception, there's delay on the input as you move your head (even today, it was REALLY bad 10 years ago) and this induces nausea quick. A screen is the least unnatural thing to use because it's similar to reality, in that you're looking at a picture, you're not fucking with your brain trying to make it think it's experiencing something it isn't. I think it's something innate in our nature, and 3D will never take off.

I've never even used the damn thing, but my kids do. They bark at me to try it all the time. I tell them to fuck off in a polite tone. And yes I say fuck. Every other kid's parents gets the call about their kid swearing at school. Not one incident to date. 3 of those mother fuckers too. lol.

Side story, my car got egged in Duluth, MN. My son started yelling "you mother fuckers!!!" It was hysterical. And yes, a discussion was had how that was not appropriate. Still funny as shit. God this comment has got me thinking how much I love my kids.
