#vladimirputin We have seen our retirement funds and other investments drop in value. Even billionaires have seen big market losses. The conventional wisdom is that fear of inflation is depressing financial markets worldwide.
I have a contrarian view. I call it "The Fear of Vladimir Putin stock market." The Ukraine war has "turned the world on its ear." Energy markets have been disrupted. Food markets have been disrupted. Commodity markets have been disrupted. The New York Times came out with an Op-Ed yesterday pointing out all the awful things that Vladimir Putin can still do as he becomes a cornered wild animal.
This man is simply a bully and a thug. If people stand up to him, they will stop him. This "superman" has failed miserably in Ukraine with 80,000 men and women killed including a massive number of senior officers in 7 months. All his armed forces have failed. His Air Force cannot carry out serious combat operations because they do not have proper communications systems to keep their planes from being shot down by "friendly fire." His Navy is in hiding and will not come out and fight. We see corruption ad incompetence on a grand scale. There are all sorts of reports on the deterioration of his feared nuclear arsenal. How well will it work? I think not well.
Let us go back to the Cuban missile crisis in 1962 and 1983. Mid-level Soviet officers (say Lt. Colonel) had their hands right on the keys to fire nuclear warheads. They both realized the enormity of such a move. They refused to fire. If history is any guide, the officers under Putin will not carry out the orders to fire nuclear weapons if Putin issues such orders.
If Putin does fire nuclear warheads, he will be hit by two US cyber-attacks lasting only nanoseconds. One will take his internet offline permanently. The other will take down his electricity grid for many months. (Imagine being with no electric power for 4-5 months!) Russia will break apart, as the old Soviet Union did.

Maybe the propaganda is much more efficient than we realize.

There's no doubt of this. Just repeat the same thing over and over again, and people will mindlessly repeat it as well, and believe it.

Today it's "safe and ....?"

You'd say "effective"

Just 3 years ago, if it was a Wheel of Fortune question it would be "safe and sound".

Nobody is immune.

The lack of investigation of highly educated, "smart" people is extremely jarring to me.

Educated people might be smart in their subject of education. However, there is a downside to education. While they become smart in their subject, they are not smart and even mediocre or dumb in other subjects.

But then there's the psychotic levels of hate for Russia

If we look at the world numbers, one will find that the number of people supporting Russia outnumber people supporting Ukraine.

I realize my weaknesses in my intellect and work on them. I'm just surprised so few other people do.

Initially, I only concentrated on science, but politics and human psychology I later investigated.

But for this "pandemic", this is science. It's true and false, medical papers aren't trivial to read, but they are a lot easier to read than a technical paper. I need a medical dictionary to read them, I'm probably 1/4 as slow as a medical professional, but I can read them. It's just statistics and data.

With regard to psychology, it's natural to model everybody against ourselves, I'm not like other human beings. I wouldn't fall for the Asch Conformity test nor the Stanley Milgram Experiments, but I don't know if that's because I'm aware of them or if this is because I'm fundamentally different. I'm probably an outlier when I think about it. I've never conformed - and - I don't think I ever will.

@richwicks said,
“ I wonder if people lack knowledge or if they lack principles?”

Both are true. They lack knowledge and that’s because they lack principles. Look at how quickly Americans were primed to report on their neighbors, fire them for not taking the Holy Vax, and discriminate against anyone who doesn’t believe everything the government says. It was the majority.
The majority.
That’s a democratic vote by the people to do Nazi fucking shit to their fellow Americans based on a quasi-religious belief in the danger of a flu virus and the safety and effectiveness of a vax.

People suck. And they suck worse now than at any time in American history. Fuck em.

I like the way you put it, I never thought about it in this way.

I'd be on the side of Ukraine for certain, if I didn't know the US overthrew Ukraine in 2014

You call that principled?

Have you not seen all the countless videos of joyous Ukrainians hugging Ukrainian troops after their cities and villages have been liberated from drunk Russian conscripts? Is it all fake? Are all these Ukrainians just a minority or secret Nazis deserving to have Putin destroy their world?

What business is it of Russia's what their sovereign neighbors are doing politically? Ukraine never attacked (or even threatened) to attack Russian soil. Ukraine wasn't opening their borders and sending millions of 3rd world migrants to Russia. Simply put, Russia has no grievance whatsoever for waging this murderous cock-up of a war.
