Fierce, funny, and controversial, Jonah Goldberg's #1 New York Times bestseller traces fascism back to its surprising roots--in liberalism.

“Fascists,” “Brownshirts,” “jackbooted stormtroopers”—such are the insults typically hurled at conservatives by their liberal opponents. Calling someone a fascist is the fastest way to shut them up, defining their views as beyond the political pale. But who are the real fascists in our midst?

Liberal Fascism offers a startling new perspective on the theories and practices that define fascist politics. Replacing conveniently manufactured myths with surprising and enlightening research, Jonah Goldberg reminds us that the original fascists were really on the left, and that liberals from Woodrow Wilson to FDR to Hillary Clinton have advocated policies and principles remarkably similar to those of Hitler's National Socialism and Mussolini's Fascism.

Contrary to what most people think, the Nazis were ardent socialists (hence the term “National socialism”). They believed in free health care and guaranteed jobs. They confiscated inherited wealth and spent vast sums on public education. They purged the church from public policy, promoted a new form of pagan spirituality, and inserted the authority of the state into every nook and cranny of daily life. The Nazis declared war on smoking, supported abortion, euthanasia, and gun control. They loathed the free market, provided generous pensions for the elderly, and maintained a strict racial quota system in their universities—where campus speech codes were all the rage. The Nazis led the world in organic farming and alternative medicine. Hitler was a strict vegetarian, and Himmler was an animal rights activist. ...

Fascism was an international movement that appeared in different forms in different countries, depending on the vagaries of national culture and temperament. In Germany, fascism appeared as genocidal racist nationalism. In America, it took a “friendlier,” more liberal form. The modern heirs of this “friendly fascist” tradition include the New York Times, the Democratic Party, the Ivy League professoriate, and the liberals of Hollywood. The quintessential Liberal Fascist isn't an SS storm trooper; it is a female grade school teacher with an education degree from Brown or Swarthmore.

I'm not a big fan of Jonah Goldberg, but I think he's onto something, here. Will sample the book on kindle and buy it if it's decent.

Famed purveyor of dictionaries and authority on the English language, Merriam-Webster, announced on their popular website Wednesday an update to the definition of the word "Fascism," which now reads "a political philosophy, movement, or regime (as that of the Fasciti), or anyone or anything else, really, that one disagrees with in any way."

The move is an effort to reflect the predominant usage of the word in modern times, according to Merriam-Webster CEO Rodney Powell.

"Words have meanings, yes, but they are fluid meanings that change with time," he explained in an interview. "We always try to assure that Merriam-Webster definitions accurately represent the meaning of their word as used in everyday life, especially with a term as popular as 'fascism.'"

"This is what people now mean when they use the word, and we have revised the definition accordingly," he added.

Pressed to respond to the criticism leveled toward Merriam-Webster for changing a word's definition based on its misuse, Powell replied that he "[doesn't] care what any dumb fascist says."

The "old Internet" isn't dead, it's just you have to put a little effort into finding stuff. Everything, and I mean EVERYTHING is online. If you read it, and think it was worth reading, buy the book - it's only fair, but buy an electronic copy, don't waste paper.

I bet there's rich folks eatin' in a fancy dining car
They're probably drinkin' coffee and smoking big cigars
Well, I know I had it coming, I know I can't be free
But those people keep a-movin', and that's what tortures me

Well, if they freed me from this prison, if that railroad train was mine
I bet I'd move it on a little farther down the line
Far from Folsom prison, that's where I want to stay
And I'd let that lonesome whistle blow my blues away

The ultimate irony is that classical ‘liberalism’, which promoted individual freedoms and limited government, transitioned to modern “social liberalism” which promotes its exact opposite: huge regulatory mechanisms to police “social justice mandates” with massive government spending for socialized programs to subsidize the ‘underprivileged’ perpetual-victim class. And since Progressivism is essentially considered a wing of modern social liberalism, that means progressivism is definitionally illiberal to the utmost degree in the classical sense. It’s all about control: forced government measures to create a scientifically-quantified ‘equity’ Utopia.
