It's really the Euro Landlords who were faced with a declining population and less rents/higher wages that opened the floodgates. West Germany and the Dutch began opening the doors to Turks and others as early as the 1950s. France threw the doors open after Algeria and especially starting in the 70s when the Euro Economy was smoking hot and they didn't want wage growth.
The US can handle modest - say 200k/year - levels of immigration, but we can't Americanize more than that reasonably.
Lots of immigrants are only here for the bennies/pay arbitrage, and it's ALWAYS been that way. 3 in 7 Italians went home after earning US money in the 1920s. It's why we created a Public School system in the first place, to Americanize Southern Europeans and Fenians.

true, as we don't have a cultural or national identity like the ireland, germany or sweden ... its about the Constitution and free enterprise here for the most part sprinkled with a few cultural aspects like college football, fast food restaurants, etc
