#cuttingthecable If you live here in the U.S., you are aware of the phrase: "Cutting the cable." Hundreds of thousands of people have gotten fed up with the high prices that cable television companies are charging. They have switched to various internet television platforms.
In our case, our bill for cable television, internet, and home security had escalated to $405.00 US per month. Enough was enough!! We contacted our technical person, Erik Noyes. (He is the best! If you are around here and need computer or related work, he is your "go-to" man!). Erik recommended AT and T fiber-optic high-speed internet. He recommended YouTube Television as the platform for delivering television channels.
We got AT and T internet installed. It has exceeded all our expectations! It is super-fast and cost-competitive. We have four televisions in the house. The TV in the living room and in the guest bedroom are state of the art and very internet compatible.
The television in the master bedroom is a Sony that we bought around 2010. It has virtually no internet capabilities. It had to be replaced. I chose a 40" LG television with Amazon Fire. It arrived. I took it outside the box. It is ultra-lightweight and slim. I hauled the heavy Sony television off the TV stand. I plugged the new television in. I turned it on. It found the internet immediately and automatically. The TV is equipped with Artificial Intelligence in the form of Alexa. I started talking to Alexa. The setup went smoothly and fast. I have my favorite channels. This technological wonder cost $277 US.
We had to dispose of the Sony television that had been around our house for 13 years. It was so heavy that both Elena and I had to carry it down the stairs and put it in the Tesla. I drove to Good Will in Burlingame and donated it. I reflected on the quantum leap in television technology over the last 13 years. I also was sad to see something that had been part of our lives for 13 years gone.
Another LG television like this one but only 23" is on its way. I will have to repeat the same process in the study. A 19-year-old TV that was delivered on the day in November 2004 when Bush II was reelected president will also go to Good Will.

It didn't "start" listening. It was the whole time man. And will always listen.

Why? Unless as far as video and audio equipment go and it has vintage value, good god get rid of it. Not a fan of throw away economy, but you got 13 years out of it and someone of lesser means can have it. Although Goodwill is a shit organization. While you can write off donations, it's strictly for profit basically. And the average American is using a standard deduction, so there's a high probability you won't write it off and reduce tax burden. This is the common misconception for people that don't do their own taxes.

You will get sucked into streaming services though. Choose wisely and make sure there's no contract and you can cancel anytime.

New TV sets are great; however you can also buy a Roku for about $30 and make it smart if you are satisfied with the picture.

I cut the cord ages ago. I have a couple of Roku channels; frndly TV, classic reel and combined they're about $14/month.

Youtube channel (not YouTube TV paid service) has lots of stuff I can watch.

In Baja Sur, Telmex fiber internet is only about $15/month. They recently ran it to the house and it looks like black spaghetti, it's not very large like coaxial cable.

Yup. We just had a kid when we did it. We're like what the fuck are we doing? $160/mo for DirectTV. I rarely actively watched anything on TV. Had a baby, well the wife did, and was exhausted from not sleeping and we're like what the fuck are we doing?

I'll be blunt. Anyone with cable TV or Sat TV is a dip ship. Or a land line telephone. I'm glad to see Ohomen stopped being a dip shit. And I know he occasionally reads our responses so this is more comedy than me being a dick. Basically you're late to the game. You should have done it years ago.

The future is donations to content creators.

No offense to Ohomen, but better late than never. I'm at the point that when I hear somebody repeat propaganda from television, it almost makes me angry. I recognized it was garbage 30 years ago, and I figured people would figure it out soon, because the Internet. 30 years later, there's engineers running around screaming we're in a pandemic in Silicon Valley because they have a covid death count on every "news" channel running 24/7 and nobody knew anybody dying from it.

It would have been worse 20 years ago if they pulled this stunt then. I might have fallen for it. Didn't have the will then I do now.
