I recently joined a band (I'm the keyboardist). Lineup is bass, drums, 1 guitar, keys, and female lead vocals. Vocalist is brassy, gravely, largely untrained and too old to be trained. This band tries some weird shit (no hip-hop though), so I'm looking for some tunes that complement brassy, gravelly female vocals, or alternately tenor male vocal stuff (yeah, she's a mezzo soprano or contralto). Genres are mostly rock, e.g., Sass Jordan, Janis, Tragically Hip.
The backing band is pretty good - the bass player is the real deal, drummer is good, but not awesome, guitar player is workmanlike, but gets the job done (he's no finger-picken' fool like Johnny Winter).
Given the other thread about what people are listening to, I figured I'd ask here. I come from a background where most of the bands I was in (~30 years gigging) had soprano singers, so I'm kind of at a loss here.
