Most of the Gaza "Wall" is just a very hair chain link fence and barbed wire, about 90km of it. Only the road entrance points are the concrete walls with the towers.

There was a draftee who did her service last year saying the systems were constantly in need of repair and it took days to repair them and they never caught up with the maintenance.

Also, it was a weekend and a Holiday morning - equivalent of Easter Sunday, and Hamas launched thousands of rockets in the early morning. The skeleton crew keeping an eye was probably exhausted at that point and I bet the handful of soldiers on duty were busy policing up rocket parts and checking for damage, way early on that holiday morning, which is why it took so long to get them back to base and concentrated to deploy out.

This happened before in 1973 but with an entire army. No intel service is perfect.

Can I simplify? Ok, you build this giant super secure vault to store your money in. It's got timers, 15 key alpha-numeric code, the works. You hire a big ass security guard, and build a super secure wall around it, sensors in the ground to monitor for digging. Guys in towers on the wall to watch for aerial attempts, the works. Then you tell all the guards not t to show up to work, and leave the vault door, and door in the wall wide open. Who do you blame, the dude who takes your money, or you?

11 soldiers killed in battles deep inside Gaza, as military toll mounts

Eleven soldiers were killed in fighting deep inside the Gaza Strip on Tuesday, Israeli authorities announced early Wednesday, bringing the day’s death toll among troops to 13 as leaders warned of the “heavy toll” being paid by troops to eliminate the Hamas terror group.

Israeli forces continued to attack targets overnight and on Wednesday from the ground and air, killing dozens of members of the terror group, the Israel Defense Forces said. Activity appeared to be focused in Jabaliya, a Hamas stronghold on the outskirts of Gaza City pounded by airstrikes overnight and again during the day Wednesday.

Seven soldiers from the Givati Infantry Brigade’s Tzabar Battalion were killed when a Namer armored personnel carrier they were in was hit by an anti-tank guided missile fired by Hamas, the IDF said. Another four soldiers were wounded in the same incident, including one seriously.

They were named as Sgt. Adi Danan, 20, from Yavne; Staff Sgt. Halel Solomon, 20, from Dimona; Staff Sgt. Erez Mishlovsky, 20, from Oranit; Staff Sgt. Adi Leon, 20, from Nili; Cpl. Ido Ovadia, 19, from Tel Aviv; Cpl. Lior Siminovich, 19, from Herzliya; and Staff Sgt. Roei Dawi, 20, from Jerusalem.

Two more soldiers from the 77th Battalion of the 7th Armored Brigade — Lt. Ariel Reich, 24, from Jerusalem and Cpl. Mark, from the West Bank settlement of Otniel, was the son of Rabbi Michael Mark, who was killed in a 2016 West Bank shooting attack. He was moderately hurt in that attack.

On Tuesday night, the IDF announced that Staff Sgt. Roei Wolf, 20, from Ramat Gan, and Staff Sgt. Lavi Lipshitz, 20, from Modiin, who both served in the Givati Infantry Brigade’s reconnaissance unit, had been killed. Quaint that CNN is calling it a Refugee Camp like it is something new due to the current conflict. It has been there since 1948, is built up with houses, businesses, etc. You can see in one of the pictures that a tunnel or underground bunker was collapsed there.
