Why don’t people who defraud/scam millions or billions run away to another country?

Think about it,

If Jordan Belfort had a plan to run away out of the United States once he became rich - sell all his real estate and super cars, he would still have been very rich as before and gotten away with it.

Same applies to Bernie Madoff - he should have ran away.

Open an offshore account under an offshore business entity in a country which keeps beneficial ownership a secret and completely private. Transfer all of his funds to the offshore business account.

Than take a flight to a country where law enforcement is corrupt and where the United States doesn’t bother pursuing,

Once arrived, buy a fake identity from organized criminals in the country and than buy a mansion and all the super cars and luxuries you need.

Buy apartment buildings under the offshore business entity with the fraud money in the offshore country and than rent it out to make a passive income doing nothing.

I guess greed prevents them from thinking they will get caught.

The smart criminals make their money illegally and than quickly run away and go legit in an offshore country. The smart ones don’t stay where they are continuing their illicit activities thinking it will last forever.

The smart ones don’t buy fancy cars, throw big parties and buy a huge mansion in the country where they are scamming/defrauding.

The smarts ones buy nothing first. They take all their ill gotten gains and move it offshore and than they run away from the country and buy a new identity.

Than they go legit in their new country with investments in real estate rentals.

Than they buy the mansion and the super cars.

Many big time fraudsters would have gotten away if they simply had enough foresight to understand what they are doing is eventually going to get them caught and prosecuted.

But their greed prevents them from having that foresight.

And yes it’s easier said than done - because earning large sums of money doing nothing but illicit activities releases a lot of dopamine in the brain.

It is a strong drug that only very few people are able to handle.

I can’t understand why the fraudsters stay in the United States or the country where they are doing their illicit activities.

Once you make millions - just fucking leave and stop being fucking greedy.

Many many fraudsters would have gotten away scot-free if they followed this advice to the T.

What’s your take?

Because the very criminals you buy your fake identity from will know who you are and will bleed you dry and dump you in a shallow grave. And if you run to the corrupt police they will do the bleeding and the dumping.

Yes, that.

I have a friend who opened a secret account in the Cayman Islands. Pretty sure he was hiding from the tax man.

One day his account there was gone, just as if it had never existed. Now who is he going to complain to?

Yup. If you think a host country is going to protect your wealth, nada. They will force you to pay them protection until you are drained, paying for all their corrupt relatives and fatuous ventures. That's what happened to Robert Vesco in Latin America. He wound up living small in Cuba and even getting jailed for over ten years after getting grifted from his over 200 million dollar grift (when 200 million was probably worth over 600 million today). He tried to get involved in CIA drug running to get back up but failed.

You might have better luck in Switzerland like Marc Rich, but eventually he bought a pardon from Bill Clinton. Hard to know how much he kept, but he had to keep paying big to keep from being extradited and lived as a fugitive for a long time.
