No it's not. You can't go to jail unless you illegally obtained it. This is why I hate guys like Dave Ramsey. You just don't pay it and take a credit ding. Get a new phone number. Owners did this all the time when short selling or going through foreclosure. I'm not giving legal or financial advice, but it's what I witnessed during the housing bust with our clients.
We were really more therapist with home owners short selling back then. Not paying debt is not the big freak out people think it is. You just have to be prepared for the next 4-7 years not having credit. If you hadn't been saving it wouldn't have been a problem, so it's kind of a take ownership of your life moment. You outspend what you had. But it's okay to default.
Most our clients had bought again 3-5 years after a short sale. ALWAYS take care of your primary residence mortgage. Charge all your expenses and default on that. Hoard cash. Get a safe. Blacks shoot each other, but I believe their suicide rate is low. Why? They know how to game the system and it's legal. They just have shit credit.
Debt is stressful; I recently got a call from a friend in Santa Cruz whom everyone thought was "rich"; he told me he owes almost a million bucks and can't sleep.

Try renting out a rental to the 500 credit score people. You get 10 apps and you can't rent to any of them.

seems like a very driven and successful businessman
does not seem to add up as far as why he would commit suicide, but still very sad :-(

depression is still not understood. but people take their lives. link in park singer did that too, he was doing well in life.
He had a lot of houses; I wonder if he had mortgage payments which exceeded his free cash flow?
