They honestly didn't think the Trump audience would have peeled their eyes away from the rally for one second and see some random guy on a roof 200 yards away, and distinguish him from an official supposed to be there.

Trump should continue outdoor venues, in fact outdoor venues only. He will be killed in a hallway backstage of an arena, while the SS stands and watches.
In the outdoor venues he has a Limo that takes him directly from the plane to the stage ramp entrance.

No, they failed because Trump turned his head at an opportune time. The fact the shooter was spotted by the audience did not stop the shooter from getting off any shots. Your scenario would have been true had Trump been surrounded and evacuated as soon as an audience member pointed out the shooter.

But next time, the audience will realize there's no point in alerting the SS and police, they will just shout "Shooter!" or "Gun" and Trump will get the hell out of there.
But seriously they had to release so much so fast because there were so many eyes and cameras on their shit. Even the SS agents taking pictures of Crooks rather than taking shots at him. They failed with so many witnesses, that was not supposed to happen.

My guess is the shooter was supposed to take out Trump, then detonate the bomb in his car. Which would have diverted the eyes from the direction of the shots, and to the direction of the explosions. They also counted on pandemonium and mayhem when the first shots were fired. But instead they kept looking on and filming. So at that point, the plan was so compromised the SS didn't give him a chance to detonate the bomb, they were liable enough for what had already happened. They used the opportunity to salvage some reputation by claiming they prevented him from blowing something up. It would have been much worse for the SS had they allowed him to detonate the bomb. Also they get to disappear the bomb, so no real analysis is done on it to see who made it or where it came from. Had it been detonated there would have been more agencies investigating the debris, possibly uncovering more than they are leading on now.

I'm of a mind to prefer the theory that Team Trump intercepted the original assassination plan in real time then acted it out for a switcheroo to expose the Deep State. The Deeps obviously were drooling at the denouement of Trump's imminent death.

I say prefer because there is so much noise it is hard to decipher one way or another from the bleachers, but Intel hands say the behaviors of the players were so at odds with real protocols that something was very fishy with the movie.

I think Trump realized the HHS and DOJ, wanted him in venues that his security detail and Trump's inner circle and fans couldn't control or pry into.
The last thing Trump should do is act on advice from the people who watched a shooter take a shot at him. And there's a 95% chance the shooter didn't act alone. If that's the case, there's a 100% he was a FBI, DOJ, and HHS asset.
