Processed red meat intake linked to 14% higher risk for dementia

PHILADELPHIA — Individuals who consumed about two weekly servings of processed red meat had a 14% higher risk for dementia, as well as accelerated cognitive aging, vs. those who ate less than three servings a month, according to research.

“Study results have been mixed on whether there is a relationship between cognitive decline and meat consumption in general, so we took a closer look at how eating different amounts of both processed and unprocessed meat affects cognitive risk and function,” Yuhan Li, MHS, lead study author and research assistant in the Channing Division of Network Medicine at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, said in a related press release.

In a prospective study spanning more than four decades, Li and colleagues assessed the diet of over 131,000 individuals in the Nurses’ Health Study (NHS) and Health Professionals Follow-Up Study via food-frequency questionnaires, which were administered every 2 to 4 years and asked about processed red meat consumption as well as intake of nuts and legumes. All participants were free from Parkinson’s disease or baseline dementia, stroke and cancer.

The researchers also assessed cognitive function among a subset of 17,458 NHS participants via the Telephone Interview for Cognitive Status.

During follow up, Li and colleagues identified 11,173 dementia cases, based on self-reporting and death records. They also determined that participants who consumed at least one-quarter of a serving of processed red meat per day had a 14% higher risk for dementia compared with those who consumed less than a tenth of a serving.

In addition, results of the subset analysis showed that each extra daily serving of processed red meat was linked to an additional 1.61 years of cognitive aging for global cognition and an additional 1.69 years of cognitive aging for verbal memory.

Similarly, consuming at least one serving per day of unprocessed red meat was linked to a 16% greater likelihood of subjective cognitive decline vs. consuming less than half a serving.

The researchers reported, however, that replacing one daily serving of processed red meat with one of nuts and legumes was associated with a 20% lower risk for dementia, along with 1.37 fewer years of cognitive aging in global cognition. This diet substitution also was linked to 20% lower odds of subjective cognitive decline.

“By studying people over a long period of time, we found that eating processed red meat could be a significant risk factor for dementia,” Li said in the release. “Dietary guidelines could include recommendations limiting it to promote brain health.”

Eh, might be true. No way to prove otherwise on my end. I'm just gonna live my life to it's fullest. I'm gonna die of something, but I'll stay as healthy as possible, but eat what I want and not get fat if that makes sense.

You also have to check the funding for these types of studies. Could be a chicken or pork industry funded study. Nothing is kosher at this point so to speak. I don't trust anything. Either way I love any typical land animal to consume and the occasional fish. Gotta get protein from somewhere.

Important distinction. Processed foods are the perfect vehicle for destroying people's health without them fully understanding why because they have little control over their food.

60-70 is when the mental acuity drops off though having boomer parents and my parents friends. I don't care how healthy you are. Not dementia necessarily, but definitely not your 40-50's when you're probably your sharpest and most skilled.

I'm not sure I want to make it past 75. Enough time to have grandkids. I'm going to be an ass hole if I start losing my mind. No one will want to be around me I'm guessing which is fine.

On the other hand, I can imagine that preservatives such as smoke in processed meat could have a negative health effect.

While it is true that some vegans seem more vibrant in their older age. I think that's just their genes. As I have also known plenty of older people who drank like a fish, and ate a hardy diet of common Americana fare, which would certainly include Bacon, Ham and Beef products and cold cuts. They never had serious or chronic aliments even at 70 or 80. Other than they were getting slower, shrinking and losing body mass. Even health nuts are eventually at the same state by then as well. Also plenty of healthy conscious people end up with chronic or even physical ailments from their physical risk taking, or thrill adventure lifestyle.

I know more younger, healthy types that have died young (45) and under. Sad when you see the land whales walking around at 60. I always ask myself how they're getting away with it.

I do think some of the health nuts do take some supplements that might cause issues. Can't remember the name, but supposedly one enhances cancer spread if you're taking it with cancer. I just stick to daily vitamins, mostly healthy food (no fast food) and beer. I feel fine outside of aging joints, hips, knees that are minor. When I'm active, I'm all in. I don't bull shit, so joints are achy a bit earlier than I expected.

Spent the weekend with friends at their cabin. Everyone is popping pills in the morning every day. I'm like WTF? 36 years old. Big Pharma is alive and strong.

It’s not a knock on eating meat, just processed meat. Processed food, in general, is industrial food.
