GREAT ARTICLE.

As Adam Smith said - because he first said it in reference to Tariffs, not Free Trade - it would be as if an invisible hand suddenly pumped up US shipbuilding if we had Navigation Acts requriing a certain tonnage volume be brought via ship.

It would also allow us to expand the navy fast, since we'd have skilled ship's crews as part of our Merchant Marine.

As for SKILL, remember the Tudors paid Flemish weavers to move to Britain, just as they paid Spanish, Genoese, and Portugese Navigators for their skills and copies of their Rutters and maps.

The Jones Act has decimated US coastal, canal and riverine transport tho. That's proven. We don't have the same requirements for commercial trucking, so.why this? Especially since a lot of Rust Belt towns are along these waterways and could be revitalized.

I think we should require US ships, crews, captains for some international shipping to the US. But more as a non-tariff means of cutting the trade deficit and helping our shipbuilding industry. Make the worst parts of the Jones Act work to fuck over China.

No. Before the Jones Act, the bulk of commercial transport was via rivers, intercoastal waterways and canals linking them. Our continent and America in particular is astoundingly blessed with the best placed waterways in the world.

One of the reasons PR is so poor is because of the JA. And why Hawaii can't ship in oil and gas from the US unless the ships stop at least one foreign port along the way.

This is also why cruise ships that stop/leave the US have to stop at one foreign port. When I went on one to Alaska from SF, we had to stop in Vancouver for example. And cruises from SF or LA going to Hawaii have to stop in Ensenada or Alcapulco or Mazatlan or Cabo San Lucas. All Jones Act.

It needs serious revision.

I was just kidding. It was only recently that I learned decimate is to reduce by 10% where in the past I was using it completely incorrectly thinking, "wiped out" or something.

Interesting though, I hadn't heard of the Jones Act. Interesting in a, that's some BS, sort of way.

Why though? Who are we going to attack with it? If we are to cocoon inside our borders to finally MAGA, all we'd only need AR-15s* to repeal any attempt at landing, amirite?

South Korea is a leader in shipbuilding but can they build to "US Navy specifications" ? yes, and that includes all the "deliverables" or CDRLs that come along with it

US Navy might as well fund "disposable ships" unlike its Virginia class submarines and Arleigh Burke class destroyers

Make them mostly autonomous unmanned vehicles with scuttle valves
