Seven French families will sue TikTok, one of the world's largest social media platforms, alleging that the platform exposed their children to harmful content, leading to the suicide of two of the children.

Laure Boutron-Marmion, a lawyer representing the families, said parents felt the platform's algorithms exposed their children to content promoting self-harm, eating disorders and suicide.

She told French media that this was the first time in Europe that parents had jointly filed a lawsuit against TikTok. "This is a commercial company that supplies products to underage consumers. Therefore, they must be held responsible for problems with their products."

TikTok, which has 1.2 billion users worldwide and 21 million in France, said it has not yet received any notice of legal action related to these claims. The company added in a statement that its community standards do not allow the promotion or sharing of suicide or self-harm and that it has specific ways to ensure users comply with these standards.
