Bay Area rock climber charged with multiple counts of rape, sexual violence
The district attorney's complaint lists three people Crist is accused of assaulting

Police arrested Bay Area rock climber Jason Crist this week in Pacifica on charges of rape and sexual violence against three people.

San Mateo County District Attorney Stephen Wagstaffe filed a complaint on Oct. 8 that lists nine felony counts against Crist. They include forcible rape, sodomy, attempted sexual penetration by a foreign object, forcible oral copulation and assault with intent to commit rape.

The crimes allegedly occurred between March 11, 2019, and Oct. 14, 2023, in four California counties — San Mateo, San Francisco, San Bernardino and Mariposa.

The district attorney’s complaint lists three different people as being assaulted in the felony charges.

Police arrested Crist in Pacifica on Oct. 30, the San Francisco Chronicle reported. (The Chronicle and SFGATE are both owned by Hearst but have separate newsrooms.) Court records show that Crist posted bail for $500,000.

Crist is a former climbing ambassador for the outdoor apparel brand Arc’teryx, according to Climbing. He also is a former employee at a climbing gym in the Presidio called Movement San Francisco.

One of the people Crist allegedly assaulted told Climbing that Crist would use his climbing knowledge and experience to build a rapport with women and then would cross boundaries in “ways that are not OK.”

Another person Crist allegedly assaulted said that Crist would take advantage of people on climbing trips.

Crist’s arrest comes just months after another California rock climber, Charles Barrett, was sentenced to life in prison for rape in Yosemite National Park.
