ICE places detainer on suspect involved in bomb threat that shut down I-85 in Greenville, South Carolina

GREENVILLE, S.C. —
Authorities said the suspect involved in the bomb threat that shut down I-85 in Greenville, South Carolina, on Thursday has now been placed on a detainer by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

Ahmad Jamal Khamees Alhendi was in bond court on Friday morning.

He is charged with breach of peace of high and aggravated nature, conveying false information about a bomb threat and no vehicle license.

His bond was set at $20,238 cash.

The booking information for Alhendi said there is an "arrest warrant for pendency of ongoing removal proceedings."

According to ICE, Alhendi, 28, is a Jordanian national who legally entered the United States on Sept, 20, 2018, in St. Paul, Minnesota. Alhendi failed to comply with the terms of his legal admittance and now has a hearing scheduled for Aug. 6, 2026, before an immigration judge.

Immigration and Customs Enforcement's Enforcement and Removal Operations (ERO) encountered Alhendi after his arrest on Jan. 2 and placed a detainer on him.

ERO lodges immigration detainers against noncitizens who have been arrested for criminal activity and taken into custody by state or local law enforcement. An immigration detainer is a request from ICE to state or local law enforcement agencies to notify ICE as early as possible before a removable noncitizen is released from their custody. Detainers request that state or local law enforcement agencies maintain custody of the noncitizen for a period not to exceed 48 hours beyond the time the individual would otherwise be released, allowing ERO to assume custody for removal purposes in accordance with federal law.

The South Carolina Department of Public Safety said Alhendi is from Oak Lawn, Illinois and the truck he was driving was registered to Globe Transportation, out of Illinois.
