This guy Christian nationalist weirdo has literally zero competition in a few recent elections and otherwise won by well over 90%.
SB 1868 in particular:
He floated a bill (that just passed the state senate) that originally was to ban ~40 plants many of them native species. Including some things I'd agree about but not plain Kratom and a bunch of wild plants.
Also criminalizing them by weight I think as the state version of schedule-1. Life in prison for 400 grams or some such. With the additional penalty of losing your property. So mow those goddam weeds!
Rumor is he used some AI to just find any plant a tyrant might want to ban. The original bill really read that way, from a CPA with no scientific background who just planned to fuck a lot of people over that use them (or haven't in 200 years or would never want to because thorn apple makes people insane forever and kills cows) because they can't get decent health care here.
The bill has removed the Texas Mountain Laurel that grows all over my dad's yard, among other things.
Anyone ready for chatGPT police state edition? Apparently we in Texas are!
These are the people that voted for it as it heads to the House:
