I wrote an editorial in the Palo Alto Daily Post in early March:

https://www.codepublishing.com/CA/MenloPark/#!/MenloPark08/MenloPark0805.html%238.05

8.05.020 Prohibition of gasoline powered landscape equipment.

(a) Effective July 1, 2024, it shall be unlawful for any person to operate or authorize the operation of, permit, or direct another who engages in the operation of any gasoline powered leaf blower and string trimmer within the city limits.

(b) Effective January 1, 2029, it shall be unlawful for any person to operate or authorize the operation of, permit, or direct another who engages in the operation of any gasoline powered lawnmower, hedge trimmer and chainsaws. (Ord. 1098 § 1, 2023).

Yet they are still visible and audible and smellable everywhere in Menlo Park because the regulation is simply not enforced. Simply walk around Menlo Park on any weekday, and there they are. It would be unusual not to run across one on a walk of ten minutes or more.

Now I got a card in the mail. Maybe my editorial had something to do with it:

Leaf blowers should not be permitted period. All you're doing is blowing your yard rubbish on my yard.
After having both, and using plenty of other people's gas and electric string trimmers. The 2 cycle gas ones are far superior.
The electric ones will just beat and whip a tough stalk around, but it wont cut it. 4 stroke weed eaters sucks balls as well.

Leaf blowers period - what about a fucking rake? Great exercise for the forearms and lats - it's a twofer: clear the lawn and save $$$ on bullshit Planet Fitness memberships.

Lol, I agree. How about a rake?

It's very dry here in the summer, and the blowers just end up making clouds of dust which get on everything in order to collect some leaves that could be raked up about as easily.

I know the electric blowers are weaker, but I don't care. My sanity comes first.

Bless you ! I wish they forbid these gas powered stinkers everywhere. My neighbors are in garden maintenance and own several of these awful things. When the leaves are falling, they love to blow every other week, all day (2 acres next to me and their own, 2 houses down the road, 2 acres). They offer to do mine too. And 'clean' it. No thanks! My undergrowth houses gazillions of very welcome birds, and the leaves that fall will be food for the trees next spring! When they have blown everything together, probably sawn a tree or two, they burn the rest. Another beautiful weekend ruined by stench, noice and fire... thankfully some times they seem to be tired of it too. Yep dust as well. I think a rake does the job quicker! And to lawn mowers - I got a skythe for the bit of grass I have!

So i suppose y'all wanna ban my backyard Tannery business next? Typical NIMBYs.
6   Patrick   2025 Apr 28, 6:49pm

Yes, and your fish sauce fermentation business too!

I don't have a problem with them, but I do only own electric leaf blowers. I have all pines and just get the neighbors leaves and just mulch them with my riding mower. Good for the grass growth, especially in the spring here. When it's rainy here and they mulched they're gone in a few days.

I also don't want another tool to take care of, although 10# is right on two cycle. Low maintenance and will always work 99% even after 20 years if you use, mix the gas/oil right and store them properly.

At least the battery powered ones aren't hellishly noisy. Batteries have gotten better, but I imagine a landscaper isn't going to be happy carrying around a bunch of batteries and chargers to keep from running out of juice.

Landscapers won't. Efficiency is everything in that job. They'll ignore the rule. Especially guys with newer ones. They'll also play dumb if they're hispanic which is the likely chance. ¿No comprendo?

Am of the opinion to just knock it out in 10 minutes instead of an hour. Does the noise suck? Yes. Live by a train that blows its horn at every crossing every 20-45 minutes all day. I'll take the leaf blower 10 out of 10 times when my windows are open. I'm a quarter mile away with old growth trees that dampen the sound to an extent.

I'll take 2-3 neighbors being noisy with landscaping but that only April to Mid November for me. I've only have to mow my grass twice so far.

Honestly I'd rather have my neighbors yards look good than care about the noise. But I don't know how close everyone lives with their neighbors. For a town we're spaced pretty far apart. None of this 5' setback line crap where they're in your house basically.

It seems it’s a division (as usual) between city dwellers and rural dwellers, with the former not understanding, nor taking into account the differences, but assuming they are right because of the bubble they live within.

@SharkyP

It's all about the distance between houses.

I'd rather deal with it for 5-10 minutes than 30 minutes. Loud and annoying, yep, won't disagree. I don't want to hear electric ones going for 30 minutes though either. Can close the windows as well for the short time.

Ultimately it's their property most of the time. As long as you're not bringing in a DJ at 10pm outdoors, usually 7am-7pm is fair game per most municipal codes. I'd rather have them catch illegals and criminals, not leaf blowers... I don't know, maybe I'm crazy. Hell. Most the leaf blowers are illegals anyway. Go after them and the noise goes away.
