But I think my key reasons are like this:
1) I think US demographics are going to cause economic trouble to worsen. Old people retire, boomers are the big generation... it will leave smaller generations to fill the economic hole. I think immigration can fill the gaps in our demographics, and maintain a healthy age distribution. Our birthrate alone wont sustain our population.
2) I believe in American exceptionalism and the american dream and the interrelatedness of the two things. IF we have a place where talent and hard work can get a person opportunity and wealth, and social mobility exists, then such a place will attract the worlds best talent and most motivated people. This in turn will drive disproportionate innovation and wealth creation in our country and we benefit from this.
So to me the equation is like this: (Land of opportunity) + (Immigrants) = (Wealth and innovation). Immigration is part of the story of why America is exceptional, and has been since our founding.

I think in any foreign country's population, only a small fraction of their people choose to move to USA to improve their lives. The people who make that decision are self selected top percentile types in terms of motivation within their population.
So I think there is a strong bias for those people to be 'better than average' among their home country population for work ethic and motivation.
Im sure there are useless degenerates too, as there are in any population including our own. But immigrants self select to make a difficult change in life, and that means they are (on average) more motivated than the population at large. This work ethic also transfers to immigrants kids to a degree. Eventually it fades over a few generations.
I would rather have legal immigration than illegal immigration of course and keep out people who are coming for nefarious reasons (drug cartels, etc). I dont know how many illegal people are here for nefarious reasons, but I'd guess the vast majority are trying to better their lives through work ethic.

We got von Braun, Einstein, etc... A lot of smart Russians have come too in recent decades. Indians, Chinese, etc.. I work with a lot of Iranians too, Iran has some really well educated people, but their government is so messed up that the smartest ones want to come here. So even nations who are somewhat hostile to USA... the individual people who choose to leave their home country come to USA are doing it because they choose the American values over their home country. I suspect the same is true of this batch of South Africans. Nigeria also has strong education systems and produces smart immigrants to USA.
Sort of like bush league and major league. Taking the best players from bush league moving them to the majors definitely reduces the average player quality left behind in the bush league. But that's why the Majors have good players and people want to watch it.
I get it that Trump is sending dog whistles about ANC and subtle undertones of racism and anti-diversity by using Refugee status only for these Afrikaners while blocking other people from South Africa... I'm not blind to that, and I think its the usual sick divisive showmanship that I have come to expect from this president. But that does not mean I disapprove of these individuals coming to USA. I'm fine with them. Apartheid ended a long time ago, and I doubt these individuals were the ones who caused it. They just don't want to live under the current shitshow that South Africa is becoming.

It's where they were transitioning from a slave colony. And became a minority (white Dutch/British) colonizers running dictatorship over majority. If the population must continually grow, what happens when we hit one billion? Continue to 2 billion? A growing population in the past was useful as manpower was needed for farms and factories, but technology advances that have made labor more efficient along with robotics and AI have decreased the need for manpower. So what if there is a surplus of houses from a lack of population growth, that just means homes will be more affordable. We cannot just breed until we deplete all resources and end up in a hand-to-mouth society.

First white South African 'refugees' arrive in US as Trump claims they face 'genocide'
The Trump administration has welcomed 59 white South Africans it has granted refugee status in the US for being deemed victims of racial discrimination, Reuters reports, in a move that has drawn criticism from Democrats and stirred confusion in South Africa.
Donald Trump has blocked mostly non-white refugee admissions from the rest of the world – even those fleeing war – but in February offered to resettle Afrikaners, the descendants of mostly Dutch settlers, saying they faced discrimination.
Asked on Monday why white South Africans were being prioritized above the victims of famine and war elsewhere in Africa, Trump claimed, without providing evidence, that Afrikaners were being killed. “It’s a genocide that’s taking place,” Trump told reporters at the White House, going further than he has previously in echoing rightwing tropes about their alleged persecution.
He was not favoring Afrikaners because they are white, Trump said, adding that their race “makes no difference to me”.
South Africa maintains there is no evidence of persecution and that claims of a “white genocide” in the country have not been backed up by evidence. Treating white South Africans as refugees fleeing oppression has drawn alarm and ridicule from South African authorities, who say the Trump administration has waded into a domestic issue it does not understand.
A state department official said the charter plane carrying the first 59 Afrikaners brought under Trump’s offer had landed at Washington Dulles airport. Some were heading to Democratic-leaning Minnesota, which has a reputation for welcoming refugees, while others planned to go to Republican-led states such as Idaho and Alabama, sources told Reuters.
Democratic senator Jeanne Shaheen of New Hampshire, the most senior Democrat on the Senate foreign relations committee, called the move “baffling”. In a statement on Monday she said:
