So I thought I should record the correct definition of "A wealthy white person" here.
I think it comes from the pronunciation of "hw" in words starting with "wh" in upper-class New England English.
Controversy about the term seems to have started when a shop in Newport RI put up an ad with only wealthy white people in it. How dare they!
