I was doing a lot of work on a different site I'm making to help people find happy hours, and got AI to tell me how to make some more elegant CSS for it.

I liked it so much, I've applied that CSS to patrick.net.

What do you think?

Love the dark mode. I have a very wide screen, so a bit wider would be nice, but that's a small nitpick.
2   Patrick   2025 Oct 10, 2:52pm

Thanks, maybe I can make width an option. I want to be sure it displays well on mobile, so that's why it's narrow.

Or you could say it's laziness. I wanted one set of html and css that would work reasonably well on both desktop and mobile.
3   rocketjoe79   2025 Oct 10, 3:16pm

Good idea to make it for mobile. Def easier to read. I withdraw my request!
4   HeadSet   2025 Oct 10, 3:26pm

I like the new display as well.
5   mell   2025 Oct 10, 3:27pm

The old style was by far more readable for me
6   Ingrid   2025 Oct 10, 3:31pm

nice. specially the blue lettering. but I agree with mell from comment 5, that it is a bit harder to read. Is it going to be white in daylight and dark at night, like Google does?
7   Patrick   2025 Oct 10, 3:31pm

Maybe I can make the style sheet an option in the user's profile.

No, it'll be the same both day and night.
9   Patrick   2025 Oct 10, 3:33pm

@mell Can you post a screenshot of what you're seeing? Maybe it's different than what I'm seeing.
10   Booger   2025 Oct 10, 3:36pm

I think it's easier to read, but I just had cataract surgery, so literally everything is easier to read now.
11   RC2006   2025 Oct 10, 4:06pm

Looks great.

BTW, my happy hour finder site is live, though it's still not totally functional:

https://happyhourfinder.net/

Note the css similarity, and the functional similarity to patrick.net, lol.

You all can be beta testers if you like. This is the first public announcement of its existence.

I'd get used to it either way, not sure I'm a fan currently. I could be though. I'm generally not a fan of recreating the wheel is all, not a knock.

Put this way, cars. Why do they change the model every damn year? I have a car with 248k miles and I don't want a new one. It will take a year to get used to pushing buttons and adjusting temps, etc. I can drive my current car with my knee and change all sorts of shit.

Fortunately I don't do the infotainment shit. I just mount my phone if/when I need directions. I don't listen to music or radio. No tickets or accidents in 24 years roughly (knock on wood). Changing stuff isn't always better. I think this change has more to do with peoples eye sight which is different for everyone. Don't mind it, but will have to get used to it.

I've been annoyed by the look of my own site for a long time, but lacked the CSS skills to really improve it. Probably could have done this with 2 weeks of work, but with 2 hours of back-and-forth with AI for a different site, I got it pretty close to what I envisioned a few years ago.

So I have to admit that AI has been hugely useful to me.
15   Maga_Chaos_Monkey   2025 Oct 10, 6:36pm

It's nice! You may recall I had asked for this, as an option, in the suggestions thread maybe in the past year.

That was because I like to load a lot of patnet content when I board a fight, then just read in airplane mode.

The old style blinded my neighbors at night.

In fact, I recently got one of those Samsung Fold 7 phones and opened it at a bar to read while I was eating some Mexican food and it blinded the bar peeps who were trying to watch football games.

I too find the light mode easier to read but I like both.

For stuff like css AI is great. Any complex backend systems, forget about it

I don't think it's different, got a standard android phone. I just like the light one better. It's easier to read.

@Maga_Chaos_Monkey I remember now. That's probably why I wrote it down as a task.

Hate it.

Just saying.
20   SharkyP   2025 Oct 11, 3:57am

Love it on my iPad Pro Max.

I really don’t like it, hard to read. Do you think we can get a button like some websites have to switch the colors?
24   WookieMan   2025 Oct 11, 7:58am

After a day or so it's growing on me. I'd give it time. A button or in your profile to switch to light or dark would be nice though. I'm noticing less strain on my eyes. I keep my screen brightness at the lowest level already. I'm a young geezer and don't like driving at night especially with these auto headlight on cars that go from high beam to regular level based on sensors. Doesn't always happen though and I get blinded. As dumb as it sounds I will wear sunglasses at night.

Everyone has different eyes. For some it's better. I didn't like it the first 24 hours but as I said I'm feeling less strain on the eyes in a short time. Without corrective lenses or glasses on I can read it fine generally on a big computer. I haven't actually checked it on the phone. My fingers don't work well with touch screen typing so I rarely comment from the phone. I need a keyboard and even that's problematic for me at times as witnessed here.
25   GreaterNYCDude   2025 Oct 11, 8:42am

For a moment, I thought there was something wrong with my phone. I'd been so used to the old look for so long.
26   Patrick   2025 Oct 11, 9:33am

Working on a button so users can swap between old and new styles...

The old look is memories I guess as well. I think most commenting have been long time users, so the change is stark, so fuck you patrick ;) That's a joke. Appreciate what you do. Just don't turn this into a car and do a total overhaul every year.

I think a lot of people are creatures of habit. Moved into the new house and decisions were made, not by me that piss me off. The kitchen specifically. Tracked it one morning and walked a 1/4 mile getting breakfast ready for the kids. Change takes time to turn into habit. I guess I'm getting a mini work out.
28   Patrick   2025 Oct 11, 2:06pm

OK, now the light vs dark mode is optional. To toggle it, first click your user name or icon to get to your user page. In the upper right, you'll see "edit profile":

Click "edit profile", and then on the profile edit page, there's a toggle link at the top:

Let me know if any problems.

Found it. Thx! Toggled back
33   Patrick   2025 Oct 11, 3:04pm

Should happen instantly, and stay the latest way it was toggled.
34   rocketjoe79   2025 Oct 11, 3:14pm

working great for me
35   Tenpoundbass   2025 Oct 12, 12:18pm

Yesterday it looked more unique, different nomenclature in the headings, but simple and easy to read.
It first seemed harder to read, because everything was moved from where it was before.
Now it looks like you reworked your navigation buttons in the post to mirror what it was before.
Now it looks sort of like the old style, but with a dark background.
I didn't comment yesterday, because I wanted to see if it grew on me, which I thought it might.
The new style you had, was far easier to see "Who" posted. Sometimes I really have to look for it, especially if the user didn't have an avatar. The name would get lost in the all of the text. The new style did a better job at distinguishing the different links. While the post text seemed to small and harder to read.

Just my 2 cents.

How do I toggle it? Is there some button I’m not seeing?

@Tenpoundbass The only change from the first deployment of dark mode was to make it wider, like rocketjoe79 requested in the first comment on this thread.
39   FortWayneHatesRealtors   2025 Oct 12, 2:31pm

Thanks Patrick, found the toggle
40   SharkyP   2025 Oct 13, 6:36am

Thank you Patrick. I’ve got a bunch of friends that would like the happy hour app. Great idea!
