[NTD Beijing Time, December 24, 2025] New developments have emerged in the case involving former pro-democracy activist Tang Yuanjun, who is accused of acting as an agent of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP). Bai Jiemin, former Eastern U.S. chairman of the Chinese Democracy and Human Rights Alliance, told our station that he had earlier received letters from both the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and the U.S. Attorney’s Office, confirming that he is a victim in the Tang Yuanjun case.
Bai said that in June this year he received a letter from the FBI informing him that he might be a victim of a federal crime. In August, he received another letter from the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York, formally recognizing him as a victim in the Tang Yuanjun case, granting him the right to attend court proceedings, make statements, and seek restitution.
Bai Jiemin, former Eastern U.S. chairman of the Chinese Democracy and Human Rights Alliance: “We used to chat a lot and got along well, so we became friends, and quite close ones. We met often and ate together. His approach to me was mainly under the direction of the CCP’s state security.”
According to the indictment, beginning in 2018, Tang Yuanjun, in an effort to return to China to visit relatives, was introduced through acquaintances to CCP state security personnel. At their request, he collected information on Chinese dissidents, pro-democracy activities, and political asylum seekers.
Tang Hao, veteran media professional: “The CCP’s most despicable form of transnational repression is threatening and intimidating overseas Chinese by targeting their family members back in China—just like gangsters kidnapping hostages for ransom. This also shows that the CCP is nothing more than a state-level terrorist organization disguised as a government.”
On September 30, Wei Jingsheng, chairman of the Overseas Joint Conference of the Chinese Democracy Movement, said at a seminar titled “Countering the CCP’s United Front Conspiracy” that the CCP has long sought to infiltrate and undermine pro-democracy circles, and that those with weak will or insufficient resolve can easily lose their way.
Wei Jingsheng (2025.9.30): “(Tang Yuanjun) not only spoke on their behalf, but also collected intelligence for them. Turning from a pro-democracy activist into a spy—this is one of the most typical examples of being co-opted by the United Front.”
Bai Jiemin also believes that the Tang Yuanjun case is merely one of the cases exposed by U.S. authorities.
Bai Jiemin: “There are spies even within the pro-democracy movement. The Communist Party has deployed heavy resources within the movement and within overseas anti-CCP circles.”
Observers believe that what the Tang Yuanjun case reveals is not merely the personal downfall of one exile, but a long-standing operational model by the CCP involving transnational infiltration, intelligence gathering, and coercion through hostage-taking against overseas dissident communities.
