Qoute, " The World Health Organization raised the swine flu alert Thursday to its highest level, saying the H1N1 virus has spread to enough countries to be considered a global pandemic." .... "WHO continues to recommend no restriction on travel and on border closures,"
If Phase 6 is there WHO's highest alert level of a world wide Pandemic, and they are still not recommending travel restrictions and border closures, then I think they need to add a couple Phases to there play book. When you have an alert level that is at it's highest level for months or years at a time, people tend to let there guard down. The base I work has been on orange level alert for months. I've not exactly sure what Orange means, but it's higher than Green and Yellow and there are no special precautions in place. I flash my badge when I drive in, and get waved in, there's no careful examination of my credientials, no car searches, no extra guards on duty. It's business as normal. If the World Health Organization continues to be at the highest level for months, if not years people will stop taking things seriously and when things really get bad (ie over crowded hospitals, closed borders, grounded airplanes) there going to be no way to raise the bar, that would say to make people more aware that things are more serious now. There should be a Phase 7 , 8 and maybe even 9, where the highest level is automatic border closings, travel restrictions, martial law, that sort of thing. To stop at phase 6 and leave this the way they are for extended period of time will become the new normal, and people will not think twice about taking precautions with perventing the spread of diseases.
Just like the base I work at, the only alert level left it Red, if your going to jump from orange when nothing is different to red where there bomb sniffing dogs, car searches, metal detectors and body cavity searches daily, I don't think that's a good step by step alert stratagy. But than again this is government, maybe triple deep dark red is the highest alert level.
P.S. This was meant for the Misc Forum, not sure how I ended up here. Look on the bright side, lots of inventory with half the population get wiped out by the plague. There, now it's housing related.
