I found an interesting website and movement that is encouraging people to move their money out of the big banks and into smaller banks and credit unions in an effort to protest the large bonuses that the bailed out banks are giving their executives.

http://moveyourmoney.info

It's obvious that our political system is rigged, since both the Bush administration and Obama administration have carried out the same policies.

If you leave your money in a large bank like Bank of America, they will just use it to lobby congress to keep the large bonuses rolling and keep gambling with taxpayer money.  Don't support it, move your money to a smaller bank.

The website above has a great video and also has information on which smaller banks in your area are stable and have a B rating or above from Institutional Risk Analytics.

Keep dreaming. There has never been a politician more susceptible to corruption. I guess you forget her proclivity for an extravagant wardrobe, tanning bed and the money for the contractors that built a local stadium that mysteriously happened to build her a house for "free".
We can console ourselves with the fact that she'll whine about being victimized by the evil media and then quit after a few months.

Speaking of Palin, did anyone see the 60 minutes on Sunday where they interviewed her handlers for last years election? She knew absolutely nothing! She couldn't get past that Biden wasn't called Obiden and these guys finally resorted to having her call him Joe. She still slipped up and referred to Obama and Obiden. They had to teach her history as she didn't know anything about WW1. Incredible she got that close to the vice presidancy.

So the problem with this idea, is how much of your money is actually held in checking/savings accounts? ALL that money in retirement accounts, and with the "shadow banking" system may be driving a lot of it. I don't really know how much citizens cash amounts to, does anyone?

please STOP hijacking this thread into a PALIN thread.... thank you!

Funny thing is I started moving my money already to a Credit Union before I read about this website. It is a local credit union in San Francisco Bay Area - Tech CU (http://techcu.com)

I never thought of choosing a bank before.. Even after the massive bailout I was 'too lazy' to move my stuff out of Bank of America.
Then suddenly, FEES started appearing on my checking account that was 'fee free' for a long time. When I asked about the fees, they said 'we don't carry that account any more'.
That was the one that nudged me....

So I am in the process of moving my money... already opened accounts at the CU... and setting up my bill pay.

I believe this will certainly send a message to the banks and politicos....

Any particular reason why you picked techcu? I thought credit unions were supposed to have better savings rates than the big banks - that one seems pretty low.

I have used techcu for 13 years, LOVE them

Yes, please stop with the threadjack.

Credit Unions in general are better than banks because every investor is a shareholder. Your deposit in a savings account becomes shares in the bank and gives you voting rights. Also, their salaries and bonuses are set by a vote of all members, not by executives that can pay themselves whatever they want.

I found out my bank took $400 million worth of TARP money and then used it to open shiny new branches instead of lending it out. Bye bye... I'm taking my $50K savings and moving it to a Credit Unionl. If more people did this, we would see real change.

Oh, it's going to be fun when I walk in there and ask for all my money in cash. I'll make sure I tell everyone standing in line at the teller window EXACTLY why I'm taking my money out, and why they should too.

camping :

Yes, you are right, TechCU doesn't have that great of a savings interest.

I considered StarONE CU and TechCU. The biggest winning point was TechCU offers BUSINESS ACCOUNTS. I want to keep my personal + biz accounts in one place. Before finding that out, I almost went with StarONE. StarONE offers a better savings rate.
That is kinda moot point because I am also with ING, which usually offers better rates.
Plus TechCU branches are near my home & work :-)

I also looked at Provident CU. But their website looks hideous...Since I am a big time online banking user, that turned me off... may be I am not doing it justice by judging by their 'looks'. Check it out yourself : http://www.providentcu.org/

If you want only personal finances, then there are more choices .

hope this helped.

why are we voting twice? once at the ballot, which is a joke, and then again with our money? We are at the point where it is clear the politicians are all paid off and working for someone else. What now? Do any of you god damn boomer idiots consider that during your golf game?

Thanks permanent marker for the explanation. Makes sense. Although, I am now blinded from the bright green buttons on that providentcu website. :)

Credit Unions will become the banks of the future and become corrupt like them too.

More than your Savings and Checking accounts, move your credit cards. Even if you're a pay-in-full kind of person, the banks underwriting the credit cards are getting merchant fees on every transaction.

I moved my Checking and Savings to Alliant Credit Union (formerly United Airlines Employee C.U.). Effectively no branches as the existing ones seemingly are all behind security at airports, but that doesn't matter because I have access to local fee-free ATMs and make deposits by scanning in checks on my home computer to their website.

Big bonus to this credit union is that they OWN AND KEEP mortgage loans. They only makes loans for a first or second property, no investment properties. They also only originate a loan when they have deposits with which to make the loan. A couple years ago they weren't originating new loans because that pool of money was dried up.

Seemingly every other mortgage I have on rental properties gets resold to B of A or GMAC/Ally Bank. I hate paying interest to those huge banks who got taxpayer bailouts.

As for credit cards, I expect to cancel my B of A card quite soon. Anyone know anything bad about using my Discover card more? They're not in bed with any gov't bail-out banks are they?

Will CUs refund some of those fees back to you as a rebate? My big bad bank does so to the tune of 1% (which makes it harder to want to move).
