Those housing shows are just shows, that's it.
They like to call spaces with formal name, because that sounds better than just saying "crap shack 1,2 and 3". What they want by doing that is making people think they need them, all of them.
And if you're talking about the "MAN CAVE", every man needs something like that sooner or later. Big HDTV and multimedia system in seperated room means "quality porn uninterupted". Even wives can see the benefit. Putting her clumsy husband into defined space, and she can forget about the big baby for a while.
It just don't have to be called entertainment room. :)

Rampant sexism abounds in modern society. And it is usually very one-sided.

You don't need to buy a house for entertaining - all ya gotta do is work for the bank. :)
I need space to host musicians I invite over to play and record.
I have three daughters two of which still live at home, through my wife we have a large Latin family and BBQ fiesta blow out week end bashes aren't uncommon.
I'm loud with my music, I wouldn't want to be my neighbor, in fact! I have to stop my self at the door, to go out and complain at neighbors or loud Hip Hop bass coming from the street, when I hear such offenses.
So not only is "entertainment" space important, but so is the furthest isolation from the nearest neighbor, in an Burbdale environment as possible.
People have different needs, I can't imagine for the life of me, why people would want to live in a Condo,(no matter how nice) or a gated community where the SOA fees are higher than the City taxes.
I've always wanted a room in my house with one of those huge 120 inch front projectors (the same type movie theaters use), but never got around to it. To have a professional home theater, you would usually need a separate room. The living/ family room would not do since the projector requires near total darkness for the images to be present. Other than that, I don't need any special rooms.

In watching some of these housing shows I keep hearing this brought up time and again. Some room to "entertain" now maybe I could see that back in I dunno maybe the 20's if someone had no tv or radio. It's 2010...things happen 24/7 it get harder to get people together so the argument of "entertaining" is someone lost. If you are a grown adult seriously would anyone go to a house to get "entertained"? More importantly they didn't say as to what this was defined as...a room for a big tv ? electronics always go down in price not up....stereo systems? mp3 players take the space of that...more importantly even if someone is to entertain others why dedicate a WHOLE ROOM for this?
The way I see it at most here's some rooms
1) kitchen
2) dining area (maybe the kitchen can have tables to act for this)
3) bedroom
4) laundry room (maybe in a bathroom)
5) tv/internet/living room
Obviously more people more bedrooms.
This idea of extra rooms for just more...stuff doesn't jive anymore
