Called AT&T today because my net access is too slow for the money. Due to the fiber run added to my building, they offered me $14.95/month for a year 6.0mb DSL, which is more than I need (Gig connection at work). Went through the motions and then the guy says "we can only accept credit cards, no checking account payment options, no debit card payment options". Huh.

Then I asked about their "no-phone-line" service, which would reduce my monthly charge by around $19/month in toll and taxes. He said if I disconnect my current connection, I have to go fiber, now that fiber is installed. It's either keep what I've got (i.e. overpay) or get a credit card.

So I picked door number 3 - cancel my account. The cheapest comcast appears to save me a few bucks per month and in my experience is more reliable service anyway. I was always hopping on my neighbor's wireless for the better speed anyway (when available).

AT&T's customer service was always far better than comcast, but if they're not willing to take cash-in-hand (debit card) and only deal with debt slaves, for dialing a few switches and sending out a modem package, they obviously have better things to do.

And the u-verse FAQ says I can... so maybe this was just decided by ATT.

Split the cost with your neighbor - if you get a clear signal I'm sure they wouldn't mind a few bucks a month. That would be "door number 4" and probably a whole lot cheaper.

We have ATT DSL, no phone, 3mbps for $19.95/mo.
