NJ has very strict laws about carrying handguns.
The only allowances are to/from gun clubs and between domiciles.
His parents place wasn't a domicile, it was a place he was storing stuff.
Aitken's story was that he was transporting guns from his parent's place to his apartment, but even if so that wasn't legal, according to the poorly-written law.
But seven years is disproportionate I think.

Brian Aitken, who was convicted of illegally possessing two handguns he had legally purchased in Colorado, will be out of prison in time for Christmas.
Gov. Chris Christie commuted Aitken's sentence Monday, from seven years to time served, according to an order signed by the governor. It was Christie's first commutation since taking office almost a year ago.
