I don't know man. I think it's always been that way, most politicians were always crooked. Although over time just a lot more people seem to be seeking some government hand out. I guess its just easy and convenient. I remember my neighbor for a long time worked for cash (paying 0 taxes) and got full government subsidies for everything to a point that he actually made more money than anyone else I knew at that time.
