No we just don't like being told what do, by Smug smart Asses in California.
Hey I gotta an Idea! Why don't you manufacture cars in California, so they can inject and dictate what goes in them or don't? California could just set the standard right at the source, and only provide one flavor of automobiles. Maybe then we could be a Nation that drives the battery powered Barbie Wrangler everywhere.
OH, that's right, California Can't because the only industry California can get are the ones that doesn't have any byproducts or waste, lest the State makes it cost prohibitive. I'm surprised California hasn't figured out a way to tax and oppress the Tech industry. I think the Californians aren't trying hard enough. The Tech industry produces as much waste and junk as everyone else. Their annual packaging and marketing material waste alone could probably fill up a Staten Island.
See that's just Liberal elite chastising the Fat Asses for not buying Eggs on wheels.

Well... that is only because it is different than what the smug smart-asses on FOX "news" are telling you to do.
I’m surprised California hasn’t figured out a way to tax and oppress the Tech industry.
Perhaps you need to rethink your notions about California.
...Ohh... wait... that would require basing your opinions on facts... never mind then, I can't expect you to make such a hurdle.
Are we really to big to drive small? I’m not. I’m over 6 feet tall and embarrassingly fat. Yet my favorite car was a Geo Metro.
Yeah, I am 6'2" drive a mid-sized car and fit with no problems.
I have test driven many small cars that I could fit in just fine, but there are also some small and mid sized cars that are uncomfortable even when I have the seat so far back that it makes the seat behind me unusable.
What does Fox news have to do with anything, or at least me.
I watch CNN, if I watch news at all. I listen to NPR, just so I get my daily dose of mental wedgies over sheer load of BS, Californians are always trying to submit the rest of the country to. No matter how far over the edge of total financial collapse they venture.
Do I really need Bill O'Riley to tell me when I should be pissed off?
I'm with ya Apoclypsescrewjob
But those cars burned gas. Not much mind you, but it didn't use underdeveloped over priced Nerd power.
In other words those cars don't have a strong enough Fuckification factor. The last damn thing the Government wants to buy is a car that runs for ever on a few cents of gas.

True. I've found that low roof lines and mail slot windows are more of a problem than leg room or hip room.
It doesn't bother me, though. There are well designed economy (low profit) cars which suit me fine.. The big on the outside, small on the inside cars are for someone else.
It's amusing when some agenda group jumps on the bandwagon without knowing the facts:
"Resources For the Future, a Washington D.C. think-tank that explores environmental and energy issues, says they've found a link between obesity and large vehicle sales, too. They say policies that reduce obesity can also reduce fuel consumption, because smaller people drive smaller cars."
We do manufacture cars in California.

And it's not that we have to try that hard to get the rest of the country to follow us. It's because we are a large economy with a large population.
Whine all you want, but that's market forces at work.
My favorite car was a ford fiesta and I'm 6'2". I liked them so much I owned 3 of them. Got 300k out of one of them but lent the the other 2 to people who wrecked them. It was the closest you could come to driving a go cart on public roads. Really a blast to toss around.
Hey Apocalypse my current car (actually my haul the kids beater, My personal ride is a very un PC older bimmer 7) is an 87 subie wagon 1.6 but only 2wd. Manual everything trans, steering, brakes, windows, locks, etc.. Strong, simple, built like a tank, and almost as slow as my rabbit diesel. I've had buses full up people pass me on uphill grades. Other than that it's great to drive.
The best small car was the Datsan B10
The thing just ran, even with out a battery, you could stick your leg out the door, push it back until the wheel rolled about a 1/4 revolution, pop the clutch and you were off the races.
Other cars always made me wonder, when something like a battery or starter would strand me.

If Americans lost weight, they would collectively save a lot of gas. Lose weight. Its good for the environment.
"He claims to be a victim but he’s made his own bed."
No my wife makes the bed Homograph.
What are you Mad too, because I wont drive a nerd Car?
Waaaaa Waaaa Waaaa
That's the sound of California, crying my aching ass because we wont Play pretend with them.
Waaaaa Waaaa The Earth is going to burn up unless you buy a 45,000 dollar peice of Shit, that wont do dick all to alter that course, if it is indeed the truth. But Still Waaaaa Fucking Waaaaa!

How much gas is alot? The CBS story says:
"The lost mileage is pretty small for any single driver. Jacobson said the typical driver — someone who records less than 12,000 miles annually — would use roughly 18 fewer gallons of gas over the course of a year by losing 100 pounds. At $2.20 per gallon, that would be a savings of almost $40."
So if we were ALL 100 lbs overweight, we are each using an extra 18gal/yr. Or maybe there's always four of us in the car at only 25 lbs over weight. each. Of there's always a couple of people combined at 50 lbs overweight combined with 50 lbs of crap in the trunk.
Or maybe the 100 lbs overweight guess is just as bogus as their gas mileage speculation.
Want to save 100 lbs -- for real? Make cars lighter. The last of the Geo Metros weighed about 1800 lbs. It's replacement, the thoroughly mediocre Chevy Aveo weighs about 2400 lbs.
I loved my Subaru GL wagon with the 1.8L and four wheel drive. Go all week on a cup of gas and it has some pep. Had great crush proof ratings - which I learned about first hand when a big sedan plowed into the back end and schrunched the whole car by three inches. Can’t imagine why any manufacturer can’t pull together something like it, it was such a simple jalopy. Box with four doors and lotsa flat glass.
a box with 2 doors and a hatchback would be more useful. That and no gas wasting 4 wheel drive.

New United Motor Manufacturing, Inc. (NUMMI) was an automobile manufacturing plant in Fremont, California, opened in 1984 and closed in 2010. On October 27, 2010 it reopened as a 100% Tesla Motors-owned production facility, known as the Tesla Factory.[1] The plant is located in the East Industrial area of Fremont between Interstates 880 and 680.
On May 20, 2010, Tesla Motors and Toyota announced a partnership to work on electric vehicle development, which included Tesla's partial purchase of the former NUMMI site, mainly consisting of the factory building.[7][9] Tesla CEO Elon Musk said the Tesla S sedan will be built at the plant.[26]
Doesn't sound like they are making any cars there at the moment, and if they are the numbers are tiny.

"Karen Steelman, a stay-at-home mom from Athens, Ga., has tried to like small cars. She read plenty of reviews, kicked their tires, and has even taken a few test drives."
"But none of them make her feel safe. And none of them make her feel comfortable."
It's my observation that, for many people, their car is more than a conveyance, it's a suit of armor. And if there's any correlation between the size of the vehicle and the size of the driver, it's a negative one.
Here's the story's biggest lie:
"Automakers have long tried to figure out how to get Americans to buy smaller cars."
HaHaHaHa!!
