Google messed up big time. There were far better ways to handle this situation. Instead they proved everything he said to be totally correct.
There are shitload of people inside big companies who pull hefty paychecks from BS jobs related to "diversity","environment","career development","compliance", etc. They have tons of time on their hands and don't really spend that much energy doing their "jobs", so they will fight fiercely to protect their sinecures. If this involves firing people who actually produce something of value - so be it.

- Amy Siskind, president of the New Agenda, a women’s advocacy group, tweeted that Mr. Damore is “every white male Trump voter feeling threatened†that women and people of color, “if given an equal chance, will reveal his mediocrity.â€
- Julian Assange, the founder of WikiLeaks, said on Twitter that “censorship is for losers†and offered to hire Mr. Damore. Steven Pinker, a Harvard University cognitive scientist, said on Twitter that Google’s actions could increase support for Mr. Trump in the tech industry.
Many Googlers support fired co-worker, and many more do not.
There, sentence complete.
I'd be very interested to know what % of Google's work force support the Engineer's view?

Interesting but impossible. Especially after that guy was fired for expressing his views.

He's a programmer for Google. Betting the guy has interviews lined up out the ass, if he's not vacationing in Ireland or something ;)
Would be fun to watch if they all walked out for a day or two. Alas, not gonna happen. Because no union.

He's probably going to be a pariah in a variety of places.

I don't see it. The guy didn't make a video, plastering his face all over the internet, he wrote what amounts to a forum post. Last time I checked, interviewers for programming jobs don't give a rats ass about your personal opinions. They just need to know you can write code.

But HR people do call for references from previous place of employment.

Sure, but thanks to lawsuits, the only response now days is yes they were employed here from x -x dates. And that's usually only with a signed permission from the applicant.

Yeah, but they google candidate's names nowadays too.
PS. I wonder if Google can be held accountable for leaking his name in connection with the memo. The memo was internal after all.

That's what people like you are hoping. It's also proving everything he said right.
This was a tragedy. They had to bring in a tanker truck of ice cream to assuage the enraged female employees.
Google has vowed to hire the most vicious, thuggish immense hirsute lesbian cock blockers to Human Resources that they can find.

This.
Their jobs depend on finding harassment whether it exists or not. So what are they going to claim?
Also, thanks for using the word "sinecure"! I thought I was the only one on earth still using that word:
sinecure
n. A position or office that requires little or no work but provides a salary.
n. Archaic An ecclesiastical benefice not attached to the spiritual duties of a parish.
Many Googlers support fired co-worker, and many more do not.
It's irrelevant whether or not Google employees support the fired co-worker. This was all about conforming to the dominant politically correct culture of America. The Google CEO acted solely based on what he believed, and unfortunately rightly so, would be the best PR move. And it was the best PR move as illustrated by every left-wing media outlet outright lying about the content and meaning of the memo and demonizing the author.
It is a very chilling illustration just how little freedom of speech people truly have without anonymity. Ironically, this makes true hate speech easier as anonymity becomes a requirement for any political speech.

And even more colleges.

The old hammer and nail thing.

https://finance.yahoo.com/news/over-half-google-employees-polled-010339596.html
Over half of Google employees polled say the web giant shouldn't have fired the engineer behind the controversial memo
Employees across Silicon Valley are deeply divided about Google's move, according to a survey conducted on Tuesday and Wednesday by Blind, an anonymous corporate chat app. When Blind asked its users if they thought Google should have fired Damore, over 4,000 from different companies weighed in.
Perhaps most pertinently, 441 Google employees responded. Of them, more than half – 56% to be precise– said they didn't think it was right for the company to fire Damore.
The former engineer actually had significant support among all the corporations represented in the survey. But it did vary from company to company.
At Uber, 64% of employees who participated in the survey thought Google shouldn't have fired Damore. Employees at Apple and LinkedIn were nearly evenly split in the poll but leaned slightly toward approving Google's decision. Meanwhile, 65% of respondents from Lyft were good with the way it went down.
I'm actually surprised it's not higher than 56% for google and 64% for Uber. This is such a slam dunk "not fire" case I'd expect people of moderate reasoning and intelligence to call Google out for doing exactly what Damore explained in his manifesto. It should be 80% across the board. Kind of disappointed it's so low.
