It seems that you can not insult an individual poster, but you can insult a group that they are in. As the group gets smaller, the individual member tends to feel more insulted. For example, the following might elicit more and more of an emotional response in you @Patrick: White men are selfish molesting creeps. Irish white men are pig fucking morons. Your family is below average. Your mother is a whore. Of course I don't think any of those things. But I wanted to attach a concrete example to an abstract concept that is very relevant whether we are talking about free speech on a campus or on Patrick.net.

What if a user says ' I think X, or X is true ' and another user says ' all people who think X are morons ?' What about 'X argument is stupid, because...?' A post has value if the reasoning for why X is stupid is interesting or particularly sound. A post doesn't have value if it doesn't offer a good argument, regardless of how well it dances around the fuzzy rules of what constitutes a personal attack on another user.

Wrong. Hate speech is a thing. But it is protected by the first amendment.

This trend with college students is disturbing, although I think the survey is probably a little misleading. Questions have to be worded very carefully. For example thinking it's okay to yell over a speaker (that is that it's your right) is a far cry from going out of your way to attend (or organize others to attend) a speaker you disagree with for the sole purpose of preventing their point of view from being heard by those that want to hear it.

I think the problem with todays college students is arrogance, entitlement and narcissism. Not that it hasn't always been a problem with American youth and Americans in general for that matter.

It's noteworthy that those that identify as republican were right behind the democrats.

Politeness was of no value when Obama was president and right were on an eight year meltdown. All of a sudden we have Republicans in absolute control of Government, and the Republican President is in a constant state of incivility, now anyone critical is silenced in the name of civility.

Goran hasn't posted in a long while so he never flooded any threads. This just became an issue since he became moderator. When I had banter with anyone (incl. Ironman) and wasn't interested in continuing (even if I simply didn't have enough free time to respond/react), I simply dropped it. No big deal, why should it be?

Goran is only a moderator of one topic, there are like 11 different ones that you can post under that he can't moderate. You have the freedom to start any thread topic you want, and he can't control it.

That was tried before. Your friend, Dan, would self moderate his threads by banning/ignoring the majority of active users here, so no one could comment on his threads. His threads became his own echo chamber of personal delusions.

Not the same thing.

How can it not be the same thing? You'll have moderators deleting posts by users who they don't like or don't have the same leaning they do. The thread will become an echo chamber of a "hive" mindset.
