I'm working on making it easy to spin up new clones of patrick.net under different domain names.

Anyone have a particular love of a topic and want to be a co-founder of a clone based on that topic? You'd be moderator-god, and own half of the rights to the domain name and the database (the source code would remain open source and available to the public for free). I do the tech, you do writing, moderation, and marketing.

The goal would be to build traffic and revenue (probably advertising) and then sell the thing ASAP, splitting the proceeds.

If you're interested, what topic would it be, and do you have a domain name to use?

#patnet

btw, I am a member of two other forums (one a firearms forum, and the other a GM Trucks forum), I have not ever been banned or even suspended at either one.

Damn, and here I was supposed to be turning a new leaf this year.

I don't imagine you have as much occasion to troll on a GM Trucks forum as you do on a politics one.

I don't troll on any forum.

Nomograph is right by the way, but nowhere did he say to restrict it to just those two topics. You are cutting your own throat by restricting yourself so much. What happens when the conversation inevitably strays into other areas? Politics isn’t the problem per se; it’s how you’re dealing with policing the forum that is the real issue.

Sorry about going back and forth between anon and CBOE, I am jumping between too many computers and apparently only logged in as CBOE in half of them. FYI, anon_4480e = CBOE

Hmmm reboot sounds interesting. I could make a write-only archive of the old content, then start over being just about housing and investing, strictly no politics.

Focusing on housing and investing will not generate much interest at this time. These topics generate more discussion when times are rough, when there's "blood in the streets" and everyone is panicking. Instead what we have is a bull market in both and the bears have been trounced thoroughly.

Politics on the other hand has potential to generate plenty of discussion over the upcoming years especially 3 and/or 7 years from now especially given the fact that americans have not really resolved the culture war issues going back to 1960s and seem unlikely to do so due to echo-chamber colonies.

Yes, that picture of a dildo shaped cake that was posted on here and not marked uncivil by any of the adults was very civil.

@Patrick where is my uncivil button?

No I did not. I also think errrrrrc is also ginchy, but I can't always understand his POV.

"starve the beast" undoing of Johnson's great society

This is a great thing for the United States. LBJ was a known racist who devastated the black community with dependency on entitlements.

That might have been an effect, but I don't believe it was his intent, and it was obviously necessary. The bad thing is the connection politically to the left.

It turns out prison is more way more expensive than public aid (for the govt) but if you play it right the owner class can get in on it (hey - more back door welfare for the 1%) and also bonus, they're not reproducing when they're in prison.

You tell me, which side are the worse racists ?
73   marcus   2018 Jan 8, 4:39pm

Btw @CBOE I was perhaps a little over the top above. I do attempt to reason with you and you had little to do with my leaving for awhile (not that you would care). Curious2 and a couple other assholes were more my reason, combined with the alt right wingers getting overly full of themselves and dominating the site more.

The alt right BS gets tiring. In my book T-lips has always been a tool, but ever since he became a paid troll for the alt right he's become so much worse than just tiresome.

I don't believe LBJ's original intent was to devastate the black community either (though I know he did not harbor much love for blacks), but it was his intent to use government entitlements for Democrat votes, and it was an extremely successful strategy. Look at the black inner city across America, complete and utter destruction socially and economically.

I'm getting pretty sick of users talking about other users and not about actual topics. No one coming here from outside could care less. It's less than zero content. It's anti-content.

Just going to start blowing every every comment that so much as mentions another user.

2018 Jan 8th, 8:52pm is the moment I start deleting any comment talking about another user. Right now.

Just as a quick aside as you’re here Patrick, when I highlight a piece of text to quote, that section appears in the quote box on my Android phone. When I do the same on my iPad, the whole comment appears in the quote box (rather than just the section I wanted).

Yes, there are great difficulties in selecting text on mobile devices.

You can see how I implemented it here: https://github.com/killelea/node.patrick.net/blob/master/node/patrick_net.js#L2972
It's the best I could do for now. One day I'll have employees who can figure this shit out for me. Probably not, but I haven't given up hope of that.
78   anonymous   2018 Jan 8, 9:08pm

Patrick is a genius for making that decision.

Thanks for all the hard work.
I know it’s been said before, but do you not think at this point it may be easiest just to let people moderate their own threads (as frequently suggested). It seems like a reasonable compromise. There’s moderation and if people aren’t happy with that moderation, then they’re free to start their own threads. It’s got to be better than the current situation. You can combine that with banning obvious trolls (three strikes and you’re out or some such). That’s got to be easier than deleting any post directed at another user (aren’t all posts?).

I did have people moderating their own threads for a while, but it also just inflamed the interpersonal conflict.
