Federal deportation officers staged one of the biggest enforcement actions in years against businesses in Los Angeles this week, arresting 212 people and serving audit notices to 122 businesses who will have to prove they aren’t hiring illegal immigrants.

Nearly all of those arrested were convicted criminals, according to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

ICE said it targeted Los Angeles because it’s a sanctuary city, meaning it refuses to fully cooperate with federal authorities on deportations from within its jails.

That means agents and officers have to go out into the community, said Thomas D. Homan, the agency’s deputy director.

Fewer jail arrests mean more arrests on the street, and that also requires more resources, which is why we are forced to send additional resources to those areas to meet operational needs and officer safety,” Mr. Homan said. “Consistent with our public safety mission, 88 percent of those arrested during this operation were convicted criminals.”

Good question.

The real solution is the imprisonment of business owners who undercut US wages and labor law by employing illegal aliens.

Not fines, always imprisonment.

Patrick,

a 100K fine per illegal would go a long way towards decreasing budget deficit and enforcing the existing laws. However, it will never happen as Big Business which has both R and D in its pockets is interested in cheap illegal labor. Arrest 212 and deport...2121 will jump over wall the same day. There will be only token arrests to satisfy Trump's electorate (see! we are doing something!vote for us next time!) while in reality nothing will change.

I agree with you, mostly.

We are under the mistaken impression that we live in a democracy. We do not. Our laws are made (or just as bad, our laws are ignored) purely to reward wealthy campaign donors with extra profits at the expense of the wages of ordinary working people. https://talkingpointsmemo.com/livewire/princeton-experts-say-us-no-longer-democracy
I do believe Trump is at least trying to do the right thing. Maybe most other Republicans are cynically pretending to help US workers while actually selling them out, but so far I still think Trump is on the side of the American people.

Who are the largest employers of illegal aliens?

Let's name names.

Tyson?

http://www.foxnews.com/story/2002/01/07/ex-tyson-foods-employee-admits-to-immigrant-smuggling.html

Hiring illegal immigrants can lead to many severe penalties, such as:

Criminal and civil fines
Loss of business licenses
Most fines are broken down to the following:

First offenders can be fined $250-$2,000 per illegal employee.
For a second offense, the fine is $2,000-$5,000 per illegal employee.
Three or more offenses can cost an employer $3000-$10,000 per illegal employee.

https://www.legalmatch.com/law-library/article/penalties-for-employers-hiring-illegal-immigrants.html

Lol, those are not severe penalties. They are jokes, very easily paid with the money saved by not employing legitimate Americans. A real penalty would be mandatory hard time in prison.

Mandate repeal, tax reform, decline of ISIS, increase in US manufacturing, end of TPP, record stock market, letting ICE actually enforce US law (I personally know a guy who worked for them). Pretty consistently acted on what he said he would do.

And the entertainment value of the conniptions in the media when Trump won in spite of (or exactly because of) their irrational hatred for him.

And yes, just not being Hillary. Perhaps the greatest gift of all.

E-Verify.

From what I've heard, E-Verify is very effective and that's why employers do not use it.

The problem is that E-Verify is completely optional for employers, so anyone who wants to employ illegal aliens to undercut US wages and labor laws is not going to touch it.

It needs to be made mandatory.

I'm sure it's on the top of trumps and all of the corporate donor;s list of legislative priorities . I'm positive that trump properties requires e-verify for everyone working there, including sub contracters workers.

You do know there is no time limit on employers correcting ss number mismatches (aka fake numbers) don't you? The requirement is reasonable. Since ss has 120 days to respond to inquiry's that makes the minimum 120 days before an employer has to do anything at all. Plenty of time to come up with another fake number or for seasonal work to end. I'm sure fixing this and getting all those illegals out of good american jobs like processing meat/fish and picking fruit/veggies is also top of the trump/republican/corporate wish list.

Wages for small business employees reporting they are raising wages at the fastest rate since 2000.
http://money.cnn.com/2018/02/13/news/economy/small-business-nfib/index.html

The pressure is on. Here come the real wage gains, esp. for the bottom 20%, that we ought to have had for many years. No more gaming the labor market with illegals.

Big Dem Donors and the NeverTrumpers are screaming bloody murder. "We're entitled to permalow wages!"

Unemployment is the lowest since 2000. Maybe there is a correlation some how? Na, that's just silly. Paying people more when competition for labor is tight. That has never happened before.

Wow, that's something I did not know. I thought E-Verify was a proposed system that didn't currently exist.

Yep, I agree. Either mandate the use of E-Verify for every single hire or fine the fuck out of any employer that doesn't use it and it turns out you hired an illegal.

Question: what does it cost to use E-Verify?

It's free. And it should replace the I-9 Form and be mandatory.

Romney, McCain, Pelosi, and Durbin won't allow that though.

Neither will ever happen. There is way too much corporate lobbying money being spent to prevent it. All on republicans that keep claiming they want to crack down on illegals. And their voter base actually believes them. Amazing.

I agree. Under the current bidding system for control over Congressmen (aka "campaign donations"), those who make boatloads of money by undercutting US wages with illegals can easily outbid the poor folks who have to suffer lower wages personally.

The way the number of illegals has been determined every time someone wants a political talking point. If enough had left to substantially affect the wage market it would be pretty obvious. Didn't happen. Less people have been deported under trump than obama. Only 80,000 people that were already living here were deported last year. Not all of them were working. Do you suppose that was enough to affect wages in a labor market of 125 million people?

You don't have to round up any illegals. You have to round up employers of illegals then put them in jail long enough to get the message out to get rid of illegals working for you. Trump properties would be great place to start.

You can round them up forever, as long as there are jobs they will be right back. I would think the experience of the last 96 years would have clued people into that simple fact. Obviously not.
44   MisdemeanorRebel   2018 Mar 6, 5:21pm

What a great idea. We patriarchs can manipulate the gender ratio in our favor, and get rid of Illegals.

Or, we could get rid of half the illegals right away by having a call in line: "Is your mean old spouse or tiresome girlfriend an illegal? Dial DHS and earn $500 cash! We'll pay for you to move out - or just buy yourself something nice."

If no one will hire them then they will not be here. As long as Republicans are firing up their base about getting rid of illegals while doing everything they can to make sure they don't go anywhere to please their corporate masters then it's all going to be smoke and mirrors with absolutely nothing changing. Just some puffy show arrests and maybe build some of the wall t hat won't do anything other than funnel big chunks of money to friends of republicans.

It's always bait and switch with the republicans any more. I was republican for 25 years until the party became nothing but a front for the libertarian hypocrites. I don't have a clue why so many people want to be lied to and believe the lies so passionately. Balance the budget, whoops, the deficit is doubling. Tax cut for the middle class, whoops 90% is going to the 1%. Get rid of illegals., whoops there are more illegals working than ever. Fix health care, whoops it's worse than ever.

This is ludicrous after 2 terms of Obummer. Let's compare the numbers after one term Trump and I guarantee you the numbers went down. Sure there is a lot of double-speak and hypocrisy within the Repubs, but the solution surely can't be voting for the left.
