If it's sold in USA, it needs to be made in USA. Unless it's some sort of specialty low volume item. Automakers should make everything sold here in the USA. If they need to bring in some cars for product mix purposes, then they will need offsetting exports from the US. Do the same with appliances, and a few other things (I am specifically referring to a cap and trade type of thing for cars and appliances). Other stuff would be covered by a tariff.
Both of my cars were made in Michigan.
Are you sure?
Yes, I have the window stickers specifying Wayne and Lansing Michigan. A previous car just said "Edison" which was shut down and is now a shopping mall in NJ.
Trade war now. Americans can take care of themselves.
And put the borders on lockdown. Now.
What do you guys think? I believe that certainly a percentage of what is made by foreign companies should be made here. Maybe a percentage of overall imports from every industry. Some industries can prosper in the US to make things for the US. Others cannot.
Totally disagree. We should be able to buy anything we want from them, while making them buy our high margin products like planes and defense.
We want fair and free trade.

I think some should be made in the US, but if all are made in the US nobody will be able to afford to buy them.

How will that grow GDP, Einstein?

I don't mean applying tariffs, Strategist. I just think there should be a deal to make more stuff here. Like I said to ZZYZZX, not everything or we won't be able to afford the products.

I know what you meant. Your thinking is wrong. Your solution will suppress trade, while mine will increase trade to the benefit of all.

Your comment is short on facts.
Right, before 1990, only the very wealthy had touchtone phones, Cars and Vans, radios, and 19" Color TVs because when these things were made it America at Union Wages, they were too expensive for ordinary people to buy.

Well, I think labor here is twice what it is in China. Now, granted they have to pay to ship to the USA. So that is an offset to double labor.

They are all better quality now. Had we stayed with Ford, GM and Dodge as they existed the world would have passed us by in quality. Ford changed to keep up. Not so sure about the other guys.
the problem i see is Japan, Taiwan, and Korea and now China too have been stealing businesses from the US. nobody buys electronics made in the US anymore.
the solution is giving out free citizenship to everyone with master and Ph.D from any countries, except India due to bad hygiene. and for every incomer we deport 10 random poor families on welfare, preferably from CA.

So we can have even more unemployed or under employed college graduates?
The screw shortage was one of several problems that postponed sales of the computer for months, the people who worked on the project said. By the time the computer was ready for mass production, Apple had ordered screws from China.

Not going to happen.

Tariffs are wonderful tools. America's original major source of revenue, and the #1 reason America wasn't Mexico.
