Firefighters are battling a massive blaze which broke out at the world-famous Notre Dame cathedral in Paris this evening.

Pictures posted on social media showed enormous plumes of smoke billowing into the city's skyline and flames engulfing large sections of the historic building.

According to French newspaper Le Monde, the fire broke out in the attic of the monument before spreading across the roof.

A spokesperson for the cathedral said the blaze was first reported at 5.50pm (GMT) and the building was evacuated soon after.

Officials in Paris said the fire could be linked to restoration works as the peak of the church is currently undergoing a 6 million-euro ($6.8 million) renovation project.

Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo says firefighters are trying to contain a 'terrible fire' at the city's Notre Cathedral.

Hidalgo urged residents of the French capital to stay away from the security perimeter around the Gothic-style church. The mayor says city officials are in touch with Roman Catholic diocese in Paris.

The cathedral is one the finest example of French Gothic architecture in Europe, and one of the most visited buildings in the world.

Notre Dame - which means 'Our Lady' - was build in 1160 and completed by 1260, and has been modified on a number of occasions throughout the century.

It is the cathedral of the Archdiocese of Paris, and is visited by some 12million people every year.

There's a report that French Police arrested 3 a few weeks ago with threats to Notre Dame.

Also this:

Don't act shocked cathédrale Notre Dame is on Fire

Last year, I posted this video of Jihadists cheering the renaming of Victory Square in front of #NotreDame Cathedral to ‘Nakba’ which means "catastrophe"

Virkenes is also probably masturbating somewhere in rural France.

I know you are joking, but if you get a chance to see places like York Minster or similar Gothic architecture, you will be amazed at the incredible engineering done during the Middle Ages. How did they even do the math to know where to put the supports? Places with rotundas are even more amazing.

Western civilization is under attack and the idiots want to bring in more of the attackers as refugees.

It's a very strange coincidence, given all the CGI footage of the building of Notre Dame (see 6:06), that this video came out two days ago.

What I don't understand is why in the era when you can't fucking buy a piece of furniture w/o some fire retardant sprinkled on it, the fucking Notre Dame wasn't protected at all.

Is Omar throwing a party in celebration yet?
24   Ceffer   2019 Apr 15, 3:16pm

This is a great opportunity to turn the area into a refugee service center with shelters.

I hope France rebuilds it all using original Artisan methods. It took 100 years to build. I imagine with moder cranes and better logistics it could be cut down to 25 years.
I would like to see Universities finally have a reason to live again. And Students and Professors in History, Art, Architecture all get involved and learn about the construction process. I would like to think it could even reignite a Renaissance Architecture Reassurance.

But knowing the Fagity Twits in charge over there, they'll top it off with post modernism crap. And it will end up looking like a Liberal took a giant massive shit on top of the Notre Dame. Expect the work to be completed by June next year, and a Chinese Construction Company will own all of the work.

No Construction Workers present at the time, French Media confirms. No Events ongoing at the Cathedral.

#Breaking: Just in - French Media confirms there were no construction workers at the time of the fire at the cathédrale Notre-Dame de #Paris. #NotreDame #France. Also the church was also closed at the time of the fire. So nothing was going on the church.— Sotiri Dimpinoudis ❁‏ (@sotiridi) April 15, 2019

Man with skullcap, beard, and yellow vest spotted on video on the upper floors the Church near one of Notre Dame's towers. Video in link.

I read the fire started in the roof - where scaffolding gave access.
There were enhancements made to fire control system in 2014, with 2 water tanks in the tower - which turned out totally inefficient - and some enhancements to electric wiring to limit fire risks.
Fire propagated quickly in the roof.

Prolly wanted to just burn down the central spire to make a point, but wound up burning down the whole shit bang.

All of Western civilization.

Hopefully the French will unify, rebuild the cathedral, and publicly admit the truth about Islam.

They'll push the accident narrative as long as possible, and/or blame the Yellow Vests.

If they tell the truth,it's Le Pen and the end of the Corporate Socialist Plan for Europe.

Why not western Europe? Is there a warrant out for you?

Seriously, if you are a fan of incredible ancient engineering, France has some incredible Roman aqueducts as well.

After it gets rebuilt into a mosque, it will be called "Notre Allah".
46   rdm   2019 Apr 16, 8:39am

There are many incredible Gothic Cathedrals, but this one being in Paris has a special meaning, particularly for the French. It seems that the authors of the posts of this thread represent well the stupidity, associated politics and opportunistic drivel of this site and likely never visited this remarkable Cathedral or if they did were so locked in the contracted smallness of their world were unable to appreciate the experience.

Think of the centuries it was lit by candles with no hint or ability of any kind of fire prevention.

What's a religious building burned to the ground?

A good start?

This has nothing to do with religion. This is the center of a country and a culture.

I hear this was done by one of Julian Assange's WikiLeak sources.
