I'll believe it's an addiction when I see Gucci-clad homeless decked out on skid row because they couldn't make rent.

Incredibly dreary and insincere, since he is obviously able to pay for his "addiction".
He is also writing for GQ, which has a vested interest in making the bling fest seem cute.
I couldn't stand watching "Sex and the City", it should have been, "Fashion Slut Shopaholics and the City", since Carrie was obviously looking for a rich stooge to finance her $300,000 a year clothing and accessories addiction.
Or maybe it should have been named, "Will Screw Like Mad Dog All Night for Clothes, Purses and Shoes!"

Motherless mother...I doubt if I've even spent 600 bucks in my entire life on clothing. Gimme a pair of fresh Jockeys, a silk Kimono and my old Space Shoes and Jody is good for life.

...okay, I just read the part about him owning 81 leather jackets...and a pair of denim jeans for which he coughed up $2500.

Author Buzz Bissenger - "Friday Night Lights," writes about his quest for satisfaction and sexual identity via $600,000 worth of designer clothing in 3 years. While it's a good read, the guy is a freak and seems to me to be confusing his supposed "shopping addiction" with his highly stylized quest for identity as a man in his 50's who's bored with life.
but it's interesting, nonetheless. He describes how far he's come in life - but it doesn't really seem like he's come so far at all. From a little boy who wanted to please his mommy to a man who wanted to appear awesome to the masses of the lesser people, he's now able to blame it all on a "shopping addiction" in much the same way my kids blamed their inability to deny themselves hot cookies from the oven as a "cookie addiction."
Except he's found a way to market his "disease," and will end up writing a book about it and making back the supposed $600k it cost him.
IMHO (and really, who in their right mind thinks that this uber-wealthy guy gives a shit about Ellie's opinion?) the shopping addiction is merely a manifestation of the "blahs" he feels as a result of his current mid-life crisis.
