So called self styled gamblers that I have known are doing two things: trying to avoid people they owe money to, and trying to collect from people who owe them, with a general net loss over time, but always able to cut and run at a moment's notice.

Gamblers are also typically depressed, because the thrill of winning is never greater than the upset of losing, so their tendency is to lose more and become more depressed over time.
