Democrats were FOR a wall before they were against it

Democrats are doing it over a border wall strikingly similar to one that they almost unanimously supported just five years ago. While House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) now says that “a wall is an immorality,” back in 2013, she supported a bill that required the construction of 700 miles of border fencing. (Trump has called for a wall of “anywhere from 700 to 900 miles” long.)

The bill negotiated by the Gang of Eight, which included current Democratic leaders Sens. Charles E. Schumer (N.Y.) and Richard J. Durbin (Ill.), declared that “not later than 180 days after the date of the enactment of this Act, the Secretary [of Homeland Security] shall establish . . . the ‘Southern Border Fencing Strategy,’ to identify where 700 miles of fencing (including double-layer fencing) . . . should be deployed along the Southern border.”

That’s not all. The bill further said that “the Secretary may not adjust the status of aliens who have been granted registered provisional immigrant status . . . until 6 months after . . . [the Secretary submits] a written certification that . . . there is in place along the Southern Border no fewer than 700 miles of pedestrian fencing.” In other words, Democrats agreed that no illegal immigrants could get a path to citizenship until all 700 miles of border fencing had been fully completed.

Every Senate Democrat voted for the Gang of Eight bill — including 36 Democratic senators still serving today. President Barack Obama agreed to sign it.

That bears repeating: Obama said building a 700-mile fence on the southern border was consistent with the principles of the Democratic Party.

Pelosi supported the Gang of Eight bill, saying at the time that “every piece of this legislation has had bipartisan support” (emphasis added). But now we are shutting down the government over a wall much like the one that Pelosi and Senate Democrats fully supported just five years ago?

Correct. The current stance of Democrats is only due to votes.

If they were truly outraged by the moral concept of a wall, they would be demanding that the existing fence be removed.

Good point, they haven't said a peep about that.

@ThreeBays what's your take on these hypocrites on your team? It was only 5 years ago they were FOR the same wall.

The American people decided they wanted a change. They changed the House to Democrats.
There is nothing Rep/Cons can do.
Majority rules. Senate wouldn't take a vote on Merrick Garland.
The House doesn't have to give Republicans anything.
Democracy is fun.
Let him declare a natl. emergency & we will see if Dems can get tough.

Calling on me directly now I see. I do in fact have work, and a life.

Democrats supported barrier building in the past. It got built, especially vehicle barriers rather than pedestrian barriers. There was also a lot of money spent on technology. Situation changed. Illegal immigration dropped.

Now we're in a different time and talking about "more barrier". Public opinion on illegals in border states is very different now than before. Does the answer have to be the same? No it doesn't.

The party has changed it's position because the people have changed their position. Isn't that what parties should do, represent the people?

In 5 years, the Democrats went from "illegals bad", to "illegals good"? The only thing changed was the President. Chuck and Nancy are in the same positions.

Really?

How does that happen?

Good thing we don't have a Democracy... It is a constitutional republic, with representatives.

Get that through your brain.

Both Republicans and Democrats that identify with their "party" are fucking brain dead. They worship the fight of mine vs. yours. They're both wrong.

Only thing that is correct is the Constitution. Until we shed all of the unconstitutional horseshit that has been allowed (but not constitutionally, the people haven't put up a fight yet) to pile on, we will continue to be fucked. Until the assholes from both "parties" realize that neither of them should be getting jack shit in aid/subsidies/welfare/etc., weather they are business or single person, we will continue to be fucked.

https://news.gallup.com/poll/1660/immigration.aspx has a lot of polling data shown over time. Almost all views on immigration, including illegal immigration, have softened over time.

Plus public opinion on border security has changed, thanks to Trump!

Chuck & Pelosi were on the side of The People when they voted for border security in 2013, and they're on the side of The People to oppose the wall today.

So, that's what I posted, the only change was Trump. Then we get this chart:

And there you go folks. ThreeBays just proved my point.

The only thing that changed was Trump being elected, and the Liberal media coming down with a severe case of TDS.

Amazing how feeding Koolaid to the masses can get such a dramatic change.

I'm happy the Dems rejected the proposal. Trump had to strategically do it and it was a good move but I don't want to reward criminal behavior with amnesty. Go back in line, kid or not.
