What bothers me is that people now seem to feel that it's necessary to share with the world the fact that they are gay or trans or bi or whatever the heck they want to shout to the world.
I don't know.
There are quite a few on this site who keep pretty quiet about it.
Also points out why male athletes are paid more. The dude went from being a top female swimmer to a mediocre male swimmer.

Don't worry, soon we will pay all athletes the same no matter how much money they bring in, gender or ability.

Was he really that bad?

"Now 19, he swims on the men’s team. Bailar has not won a race since transitioning, and is fine with that."
Now, would you call that crotch bulge a camel toe, a moose knuckle, a moose toe, or a camel knuckle?
And I should care because why?
The major parties have made a political issue out of which bathrooms trans people should use. Personally, I think the best answer is to change building codes, on a going forward basis, so that in the future we'll see more single occupancy bathrooms and less of restroom enthusiast Larry Craig's "wide stance." Meanwhile, Republicans are trying to roll back employment discrimination laws by scaring people with the rare possibity of a 6' anatomical male following a little girl into the ladies room, and Democrats are calling anybody who mentions that possibility a hateful bigot. Politically, the actual trans people are merely being used as pawns in a larger contest between the two major parties, but Leslie Stahl does a good job reporting facts; she did a similar story on twins and sexual orientation years ago. I tend to skip the endless stories on professional athletes (somebody moves a ball from A to B, I should care because why?), but I saw Leslie's two reports about kids.
And I should care because why???
They have to distract you with something while they rob you blind.
Gay marriages won't do it anymore.
Since when did broadcasting your life and all it's warts become 'the thing' to do??
Broadcasting culturally relevant stories of individuals who personify various social changes of the day is a common 'thing to do' for news shows like 60 minutes.
Broadcasting a typical person's personality flaws (warts) has not been so common, because that is not a very interesting story and nobody wants to have their flaws broadcast on TV.
And he's less likely than a Republican congressman to commit a lewd act in a public restroom.
What is to prevent a straight, anatomically correct male from entering a women's restroom, under the pretense of being transgender?
The same mechanism which stops them from doing it in drag, now: Free, lifelong sex-offender registry membership.
Yeah, it's interesting that GOP folks in red states are being told to be angry about this right now.
It isn't the presidential election. I wonder which consultant or national GOP strategy organ is behind this, and why.
The same mechanism which stops them from doing it in drag,
Nope. The straight man in drag could use the transgender defense. Without transgender laws, he could not.

What could he accomplish in there, anyway?

Ask a woman that question. As noted, pervs are filming women and children in restrooms.

Is this by placing wireless cameras or something else? How would the bathroom legislation address this issue?
How would the bathroom legislation address this issue?
There are laws that already address this. But there'd be no need for the illegal surveillance if you could be there in person.

So, you're talking about being there to see it in person or film it in person? As far as filming goes, I don't understand how the gender of the person affects the ability to film. As far as being there in person to see something, it seems unrelated to pervs filming the bathroom.

A perv cannot legally enter a women's restroom now and get his rocks off watching women and children. Hence he must resort to illegal surveillance. But if you are there in person, perhaps there is no need to film. And it would be much easier to film if you were there in person. If you are not filming, but are a man in a woman's restroom, you could cop a transgender defense with the new law. If there were no new transgender laws, you would have no defense. I don't know what happens if you are a woman filming other women and children in a restroom, but males are physically stronger than females, and cases of lesbian rape are rare as far as I can tell.
This is a very, very important issue, that we should expend unlimited amounts of time and energy on

What about that mom who wants her son to father her next kid?
Yeah looks like he permabanned me again for broadcasting a heads up that he was on a dude run...he's really sensitive about that..
and then there's Dan, who doesn't hide his love of old naked guys and fondness of sex with animals....
What about that mom who wants her son to father her next kid
That can wait until we get this sortied out
So last night, 60 minutes had a story on a person who is a swimmer for Harvard who changed their gender from female to male. And I should care because why???
I turned the program off - hey, if the person had a problem with their gender then whatever. They took the steps that they needed/wanted to 'correct' what they perceived to be the problem - good for them. What bothers me is that people now seem to feel that it's necessary to share with the world the fact that they are gay or trans or bi or whatever the heck they want to shout to the world. Hey, I have my problems/issues too, but I really don't (never have) felt the need to make sure the world knows about it. Since when did broadcasting your life and all it's warts become 'the thing' to do??
