yawn. AN Ar-15 is actually very easy to shoot. I shot combat 45 since I was 8, my father was on the air force pistol team for years.

And easy to maintain...

I asked this question a while back. Someone said a 22. It is true it has almost zero stopping power but you have a 12 gauge for that. The thing about the 22 is that it is very accurate and you can put a shit load of shells into the zombie very easily. Plus ammunition is cheap and readily available.

At least back in the old days, when I was young, 22LR was cheap as hell. I used to have a 22 high standard for range practice when I didn't feel like spending money on 45 ammo, and a reminginton nylon barrel 22 rifle. when I was kid those were like $85 new.

Idiotman likes the 22, because he is only 130 lbs, so it's naturally a good fit. Plus, larger rounds are too stressful for his aging marbled rotator cuff.

It tends to tumble when hitting people, doing much more damage than its size suggests, and its very high speed makes shooting at distance easier, since it does't drop as much or get blown by the wind as much.

You earlier claimed that it wasn't particularly lethal. Recent mass shootings suggest otherwise.

I don't hunt deer so I don't care. When I did hunt deer as a kid in the heavily forested midwest, I dropped them with a bow and arrow, so I'd suggest I wouldn't have had any problem with a 223 round.

Generally a rifle bullet has a lot more powder behind it than a pistol bullet. So a .223 would be traveling at 3500-4200 fps versus a .45 pistol bullet going around 1250 fps. That's a major difference in penetration and hydrostatic shock applied to the target. It means that rifle bullets are much more effective at creating devastating wounds, rather than neat little holes.

I'd say multiple recent terrorist attacks have settled whether or not the 223 round is dangerous, or not... Plus the DC "sniper" years ago.. etc.

BUT the ar-15 style gun is and can be chambered in many different calibers. Here's a link to 4 big game variants:

That being said, the lightness of the ammo, excellent accuracy especially int he 20 in original barrel length, lead me to favor the standard 223.

Ironman, you are correct that the media and most liberals are out to lunch on their gun views.

My first shooting rifle outside of 22's was a Lee Enfield 303, which was the british assault rifle of a century ago ,through the 50's. Assault rifle, excellent target and hunting gun.

My next was an M1 garand, the standard service gun for the US forces through the korean and early vietnamese wars.

These were the "assault rifle's" of their day, and nobody ever questions them as hunting guns, or whether or not they are ok to own. They are utterly lethal guns.

Really, the only thing separating today's "assault rifle" from anything else, is that they look scary. Black, modern plasticy... AND perhaps high capacity magazines, however, honestly, you can drop and reload magazines in less than 2 seconds if you've practiced.

So, what makes a gun an assault rifle? If you say "automatic fire" you are eliminated from the conversation. NONE of the ones you can buy are automatic, they are all semi-auto, and have been so for decades. One trigger pull, one bullet.

Honestly, the reason they are today's assault guns are the following:
1. light weight, so you can carry it all day. go for a walk for several hours carrying a 10 lb weight in your hands, let me know how it feels!
2. easy to shoot, easy to clean and maintain.
3. reliable. (at least now, in its early days the M16 had a terrible reputation for jamming)
4. customizable. You can add lazer for targeting, or optics, or shoot it well with open sights.

and that's about it. Aside from looking "evil" they are actually just good all round guns, and that is why ar-15 and ak versions are some of the most popular guns for competitive shooters, hunters etc.

Um yah I converted my .22 Savage LR from semi to full auto by filing down one pin when I was 12. Could pull the trigger and rip off 15 shots in about two seconds. It was badass. My dad was pissed tho, said I'd ruined the rifle he gave me. Not that it wasn't the cheapest possible .22 LR model available....

full auto is almost always, stupid.

I have a pump shotgun with buchshot in it, if I really wanted to spray lead around a room. That is a better home defense gun.

The Ar would be for long distance target practice, but really would just be a toy with no purpose.

I'd probably play with it for a while, then leave it in the closet...
