Tariffs do nothing to recapture those jobs. And automation shows no signs of slowing down. Eventually, the country is going to have to find a way to deal with this reality.

Huge myth. Go check out the massive Chinese factories, huge numbers of laborers. It's far better to have 1000 car factory workers in a highly automated plant than 0. Incidentally, if Steve Jobs shamed a male software engineer (to the point of driving him to tears), many would admire his capacity to push his people hard and get them to do things they themselves didn't know they could do.
