Seems to go in cycles. The war in the 40's distracted the kooks, then the complacent 50's and early 60's found the organization men perfectly content buying modern suburban homes, color TVs, chrome and tail-finned cars and of course the New Left hated that kind of materialism. So thirty years later goofiness cycled around again as the 60's blended into the 70's era of self-help gurus and panaceas, est, rolfing, Esalen Institute, primal scream, sweat lodges, Scientology, then kind of faded away. It's taken almost 40 years for another round of nuttiness to come over the society. Today environmentalism/global warming/climate change/diversity/race/gender/class/LGBTQ+ is the bandwagon all the nuts who were orphaned by the collapse of the Soviet Union are clambering aboard.
